Always remove them fresh or frozen.

Remove them when freezing. They contain most of the bacteria and can spoil the quality of the crab.
I don't remove them for general fishing other than flounders when using fresh.

Some say they have to be removed others say its ok to leave them on.
Im not sure it makes any difference but always remove them anyway just in case, it only takes 2/3 seconds so i dont think its worth chancing leaving them on.

From what I've read the bacteria doesn't freeze and taints the meat so its always best to remove the lungs when freezing down peeler. As for removing them when the crabs fresh I wouldn't bother. I doubt the fish dissect the lungs before they eat them in the sea.

I thinks that’s an old wives tale.

I often use the frozen un-peeled whole crab from wexford, i’d have absolutely no problem using this over fresh crab belive it or not such is my faith in it. “dead mans fingers” included!

i take out there eyes ,spleen and kidney,s and wash them down with a nice Chianti :lol: :lol: :lol:
freezing = lungs out
fresh = lungs in /unless the crab is quite old and the lungs look gank ,this is normal if they havnt been given regular drinks of fresh sea water to stop them peeling too quick or they where a smoker :lol: :lol: :lol:

you peel for everything lad, you'll struggle to get them on the hook otherwise!
