Fishing at Garyvoe/Ballycrenane?

Sun Jul 14, 2013 5:31 am

Hi all,
I'm new to the Forum just joined up,I've been out of the angling game for a long time but i'm hooked again (pardon the pun).I have fished alot over the last few wks and all i've caught is a doggy at the deepwater peer in Cobh.I'm thinking of trying Garyvoe during the week some evening, can anyone tell me if the fishing is good there at the moment please?

Theres a lot of small eels down there. Their pests as they usually mangle your trace. Theres a few dogs about too and maybe a ray. I wouldnt be bothered casting out a bait till dusk/darkness on the garryvoe beaches tho, especially in this bright weather.

Thanks for the advice Red,
I was down there Mon night n caught feck all!Was using Lug and Mackeral for bait & started fishing round 08.30 until around 12,was gettin some bites alrite but more than likely from crabs or like you said eels!I hooked one crab and brought in a few messed up traces

If the water is calm stick to sandeel or crab. Mack would be my 3rd choice unless its very fresh. Peel the crab legs too and use them.
Google the "long and low rig" and make a few up or else use pulleys with long snoods. No need for big hooks either. I had an 11lb ray last year on a size 2. Cast as far as you can and hope for the best.
Paul coady in east cork bait and tackle usually has fresh crab and his sandeels are as good as you will find anywhere. Keep the sandeels frozen till you need them tho. A thermos flask kept in the freezer is good and take one out at a time.

Thanks again for the advice Red!
I didn't have the time to gather crab that day but i caught the mackerel the day before so they were nice and fresh.
I was using basic 2 hook paternosters with 3/0 hooks (hoping for my first Ray) and only casting 40 & 70 yards approx with 2 rods, next time i go there i'll be more prepared and i'll try out those traces you mentioned.

It's a bit early yet for ray off the Garryvoe beaches I'd normally wait until late September. Always remember that these beaches fish best from dusk into darkness

im sure we were talking to you that monday night in ballinwilling myself and another lad were fishing a comp. it was the first night ive ever blanked there so it was just a bad night for it. mackerel and sandeel have always worked for me there and lug or crab for bass and flounder its always better to fish with a bit of rough to the water

Ideally for there you would be better off up to the right of where you were and I normally find the low water up the best time and dark. Fire me a pm next time you are heading out and if I'm around ill meet up with you for a few casts!
