Your better off buying mono by line thicknes as some lines are marketed differently. Suffix tritanium is my preffered line and when i bought it first it was 15lb in .35mm. They then changed how they market it and .35m became 19lbs. Same line and no difference.
By buying a 15lb line it could be very thin and could get a little frayed too easy. .35m for me anyway is perfect and i only use different if im using a very light set up.

Thanks for the comment, Sorry I should have mentioned the line is stren monofilament and it comes with the reel I'm hoping to buy, the options you can get are 210m/17lb, 180m/20lb, Or. 240m/30lb, I will be hoping to do pier fishing for bull huss, rays, flatfish, and surf fishing for bass so out of which of these three lines would so me best?

Most people would have 2 reels for the types of fishing you are looking to do. I would normally go for 0.31 or 0.35 for for flats and Bass and heavier for the pier fishing. If you have to stick to one line go for the 20lb line, and try get a drop net for the pier fishing so you are not lifting bigger fish on 20lb line. If a drop net is not a runner, fish a longer shock leader so that you have a couple of turns of the leader on the reel when you are lifting the fish up the pier.

Thanks for the comment, is it not more ov an advantage to have 30lb line you get 60m more and you can pull out of snags or pull fishing out of snags?

Go with the 17lb line. Anything more is overkill for general beach fishing and will cut down on casting distance.
If you feel you need heavier line from the piers you can buy something and stick it on a spare spool.

I fish 12lbs on my 11'6" bass rod, 15lbs on my heavier 12'6" bass rod & 18lbs on my 14' Beachcaster which I only ever use over rougher ground or for rays etc. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the comment I will go for the 17lb line, few more questions why does 30lb fit more on the reel than the 17lb and is a 10ft or 12ft rod better for surf fishing?

It wont, its probably a different sized spool of line. 12 foot would be better suited as 10foot woukd be too small for general beach fishing. Most rods would be between 11-6 to 14foot but can be longer.

a 12ft rod at least for surf casting a 10ft is bit small as stated

Good advice on the drop net, it's an expensive lesson to learn (losing a good fish) without one. I might add if anyone does purchase a drop net, buy a rectangular one, far easier to handle in wind than a round one.

Hi. Being a newbie I have a few q's on the advice above, apologies if they're daft questions. As said I just started and good old Aldi got me back in the swing by selling 12" rods & reel for 40 quid or something. Checked it last night and it's a 30lb line - is this nuts, should I change it? I'll be looking at pier & shore fishing (first outing this Friday I hope).
Whats the problem with lifting a fish on a bigger line, which it looks like I'll be doing, hopefully?
Final Q - and an embarrassing one - what is a shock leader?
Thanks in advance
