was out for a drive the other night, ended up down this way lol.

does it produce anything from the shore? looking at the pier it looks like your casting onto a shingle beach. would it be worth a go for cod ?

Cheers Neil

Hello,

I used to fish Kilkeel some years ago. The easiest fishing there was right between the two piers for some of the biggest, blackist flounder I ever seen. Coalies where plentyful as well though rarely any bigger than a couple of pounds. The end of the southern pier had a load of conger under it.

The beach to the right (south) of the harbour mouth was sloping sand and ran into a reasonable depth for that part of the coast. We used to catch codling from it but during herring season you could hook into some of the biggest spurdogs you ever seen. They were feeding on the herring shoals and the big females where in-pup. We had more than a dozen well over the British Record weight at the time.

We haven't fished it in years but it should still offer up a few fish. One word of warning. The north shore is mainly mussel beds and rocks that run well out past casting range. It's a one way trip for your rigs.

Also if you leave your car at the pier if you venture onto the beach, leave nothing visible in the car. I and others have learned the hard way.

What sort of Distance you getting the Spurs at mate?

Hello,

We were trying for cod at the time and the spurs where getting to the baits first. We were using herring fillets cut and whipped on to pennel rigs. We where hitting as far as we could but one or two were hooked closer in. The south beach slopes away fairly sharpish as the area has been dredged to let the trawlers in and out.

This was a few years ago but friends have fished it in the last two years around October through to the New Year and had fish, codling, spurs, LSD,s and whiting. Just be careful where you leave your car as the harbour after dark is a local hangout for the usual idiots.

The steep shingle beach to the left of the pier at Newcastle used to be a great winter cod spot..Just wondering if any of you lads up there (tryer) th have tried it recently..

We have fished all over Dundrum bay at one time or other. We used to get some good flatties and turbot from the northern shore around Tyrella beach. The sinkng sand at Tyrella was a problem though, especially after dark.

We had codling and whiting from inside the point at St John's lighthouse but it wasn't easy fishing there. We fished the south side of the bay many times but i don't remember the beach being too steep there. Fading memory! We fished from on and around the little harbour to places we could get to. I don't remember catching many cod though, flatties and dogs, coallies and mackerel, yes. We had to go on round the point heading towards Glassdrumman a little for cod where there was more roughish ground. I've seen other anglers take small codling on float tackle there. It was a bit of a march down to the mark and a killer on the legs to get back up out of it to the car. We used to get a few cod from around Killough. The pier was useful in bad weather and we sometimes went on round about halfway towards St. Johns. The ground was mixed to heavy in places but there were fish there. It wasn't an area you wanted to fish alone though. If you hurt yourself it could be a long time before anybody found you!
