Im planning on making a trip down to youghal on the 8th or 9th of march.just wondering would it still be throwing up any decent codling this late on.If there's not too much rain on the lead up to the trip I would fish the Abbey during daylight and fish the strand through the night.Im open to suggestions and would appreciate any tips (never fished youghal before) Thanks in advance

there might well be a run of cod at that stage in the estuary, you'd have to see closer to the dates you plan to fish it if there is anything around.i would say that youghal beach could well be quiet by then do,unless you there is a bit of a blow before you plan to arrive there.beachs down around east-cork dont normally fish very well that time of the year, unless maybe some of the surf beachs might have a few bass knocking around then.other then that id say you probaly would catch a few half decent flounder around youghal if you have any interest in that.

I'm thinking of heading that way this weekend would anyone have any thoughts on this. Will our recent fresh water abundance cause the beach not to fish

.

since the run of codling in youghal this winter has been pretty abismal a better option for your trip would be to try for a decent painted ray off youghal beach. a good few specimen fish have shown up in recent weeks and a bit of mild weather coming in to march would throw up ideal conditions. crab sandeel and mackerel are the only baits youll need.

Your chances are not great. There were some decent codling in the estuary earlier in the winter but by mid-January there were getting scarse. Before that I was getting on average 4 keepers per session (fish 2 lbs and above) but from mid-January I was just averaging about one decent fish per session.
I would not bother with the Abbey, it has fished very poorly this winter. I did get a few small codling there but only after dark and by March I would think you would be wasting your time.

The beaches would be a better bet - if there is a good surf it might bring in a few codling but dont expect much over a couple of pounds. If the weather is mild there should be a few bass showing up by then, provided there is a good surf.

Thanks for the replys lads.I suppose it will be hard to pick a venu until closer to the time.I will be keeping an eye on the winds etc.Sounds like the beaches will be safer bet. Thanks for the heads up about the Abbey RockHunter ,someone told me it fishes well during the day due to the deep water.Won't be completely focused on codling, would be nice to get a few decent flounder or a ray.Outings are few and far between at the moment so Im just making the trip in the hope of a few better fish than whats knocking around the east coast .
