Why use Maddies/Harbour Ragworm

Mon Feb 11, 2013 4:08 pm

Hi guys,

I hear a lot about maddies or harbour rag as bait especially for competition anglers. My question is why use them and what species are people targeting when they use them? What advantage would they give in a competition situation?

Thanks Lads.

Hi tom,,,,,,flatties seem to be why they use them most as it is these fish that will win for nearly all the time. ive seen lads at competitions with them and not one would get a flat on them but other days then you would not get a fish with out them.also when you get used to them and using them as bait you can quickly adapt to your competition sized hooks and put out a good presentable bait with them, maybe tipped with mack etc. so its just one of those bring along things.some lads have more advantage of getting their hands on them than others thou. personally if i can get me hands on a few i like to use them for the cod on the rough ground marks

Maddies work in two ways.... they give off a lot of sent in the water they also give vibrations when head hooked in bunches. They are very good for small fish when fished in close and in particular flounders. No serious match angler would fish without them on flat sandy beaches. They have come under serious pressure in the last number of years with some bait beds been obliterated. Two anglers fishing together on a beach one has maddies the other hasn't.... the chances are the lad with the maddies will catch more fish provided he knows how to use them.

So there is obviously a technique then . You mentioned in bunches and fished close in . Presumably small hooks and the worms pierced near the middle a couple of times . I can imagine that there is also something else but won't ask you to give away all your secrets !
I found them effective for Golden Grey Mullet in the uk . Haven't tried them over here .
Good luck
