Using fixed spool on a multi rung rod?

Have been looking a few second hand rods but any of the ones I've had any interest in have been rung for multipliers. I only fish with fixed spool reels so I was wondering if I bought a rod that was rung for multipliers with a sliding reel seat is there any major disadvantages to using a f/s reel on it. I've heard you can loose a bit of distance in your cast with this set up but it wouldn't be a deciding factor for me really, I'd be more worried about long term damage to the eyes or the blank. Any thoughts would be appreciated

I use a Ian golds rung fr a multi with a fs no damage to mine ... Could be wrong tho haha

it depends what rod really some multi rods would be just too stiff unless you can pendulum cast but alot of the softer ones would be ok their is a penn affinity twin tip in the for sale section that is for fixed spool use

It's the softer type I'd be looking at alright so hopefully I can pick one up. I saw the penn rod alright but I'll be buying this rod from a tackle shop, I have credit behind the counter and will be putting it towards the rod.

I have a Abu Garcia Stigma rung for multi and use a fixed spool and no problems and dont expect any...

The main point of concern is a Multiplier Rod has more eyes. Typically the first eye is closer to the reel with a Multiplier rod and it is also a smaller eye in comparison to a fixed spool rod's first eye. Normally 25mm versus 40mm+
Line coming off a fixed spool reel does so in loops or coils. The larger eye is there to help stop the coils wrapping or getting caught in the first eye and snapping the line. This does not happen too often and is less likely to happen if you are not power casting. With the smaller eye closer to the reel it is more likely to happen, but again not something that happens too often with normal casting.

Yeah I had considered getting in contact with ShaneH alright but I think I'll fish with the setup as is and sure if I run into any trouble I'll give him a shout.

I used a multi rod with a fixed spool reel and no problem at all I could match the distance of other anglers using multi rod and reels and fixed rods with fixed reels. But softish tip rod would help your distance

I've decided on the rod and stuck a deposit on it,stiff enough rod but want it for fishing the likes of foynes where huss and ray are expected and want something that will hold its own when there's a big rip in the tide.Am picking up a conoflex nemesis slr 2002,read a bit about them and they dont seem to be an all out broom handle,supposed to be a decent fishing tip on them.

Already have a second hand rod in mind so I'm just gonna fish with the setup and see how it goes. Worst case I don't like it or can notice a huge difference in distance I'll just get the rod rung for f/s

i have a dawia seahunter x 14ft its for a fixed spool and i find it great it cost me 110 in henrys tackle

Just to echo this top advise from Mac. This is more likely to happen if the wind is kicking up. When I started off some years back I was down south fishing. First 3 or 4 casts I was whacking them out as the wind was quite strong. Snapped off 3 times from the bottom and was very puzzled. An experienced angler I was fishing with noticed my bottom eye was quite small and wasn't letting the line pass through fast enough. The line was coming off the FS in bigger coils than usual due to the wind. The rod itself was rung for fixed spool but had a smaller eye than most fixed spool rods. Id dread to think what would happen with a rod rung for multis. It was lucky I had a second rod with me that day with a much bigger bottom eye. Solved the problem.

I have the rod and all now and havn't had it out for a cast yet. I don't like the thought of not having full confidence in the rod I'm casting with but the only way to find out how it preforms is get to get out and give it a lash. If I run into any un explained snap offs I will definetly be getting it re rung for f/s.

Thanks Shane, I may well take you up on that I'm going to fish with the rod for a while anyway as I'm not going to have the funds to get the rod re rung for f/s anytime soon. Will give you a shout if I'm going down that road. Cheers
