you can buy an inverter which will allow you to use appliances with regular plugs . Most automotif centres should be able to get them .

If your going this route Brian I would suggest a seperate battery and a simple split charge system for your Van. The split charge systems for cars/vans can be picked up from Ebay fairly cheaply. You'll need to know a little about electrics to install it or get someone who does as a nixer... With a split charge system at least you won't kill you main battery trying to dry your gear.... Also the 12v cigarette output normally won't be able for the load that a heater would put on it and you will be for ever tripping fuses in the van.

You would need to loop the positive going through an isolate sw from your van battery to the new one and get a good negative in the engine bay then depending in what kw rating the heater is, cable up to that size with a inline fuse on the circuit. The reason for the switch is when your van is running and your using the heater the sw is on but when your not using the heater the sw is off as this will take the extra load of your alternator and not burn it out which would only leave you with what juice is left in the battery as it wont be getting a charge and you will need a reconditioned alternator!!!! 13/13.5 vdc is normal charging voltage.
