If it's Carne pier in Wexford you mean, then I have have fished it a couple of times with little success, with just a few doggies showing. The beach is supposed to produce bass in surf conditions, but I wouldn't be overly confident of it, and their are much better marks close by for bass (ie. St Helens). I'd try heading around to the Coombe, and fish from the very last entrance point on the road (ignore the first 3 or 4 entrances - the last entrance is marked by a height restriction bar), where the ground is not too rough. The ground from the rocks (at the 1st entrance) down about 1k is very tackle hungry, but produces good fish if you are willing to lose plenty of gear. The whole stretch of beach down as far as Rostoonstown should start to produce codling around now, with plenty of flounder, doggies and whiting too. There's always the chance of bass within 20 yards if there is any surf.
There doesn't seem to be any point fishing wexford beaches during the day, although there may be exceptions to that rule (particularly when there's a good surf).

Steve,
I've fished this spot Coombe to Rosstoonstown for a while and have taken two undersize but not small :) Bass on peeler. What is good bait for the codling and what rigs and distance should I be considering.
Thanks,
QF

Autumn/September/october seems to be the best time for bass, peeler would be a good bait, but it's not totally necessary as I've had them on plain ol' rag and lug. The main thing you are looking for is some surf. The day before a spot of bad weather (when the sea is just starting to turn rough) is normally your best bet, although I've caught bass here during the height of storms (even though it's almost completely unfishable at times due to the huge rafts of weed). You only need to cast 10-20 yards, the fish tend to travel along the gutter.
Bass can be caught on large baits fished close in on calm summer nights too, so a fresh mackeral fillet might give you a chance of a decent one, especially if there are mackeral shoals around.
Sandeel seems to be a top bait for flounder, and they should be plentiful enough on the beach now. There are normally hundreds of doggies on this stretch. Early December is a good time for codling, especially of there is some sea running. Big baits are best, with peeler topping the list, although large lug baits, and cocktails of lug and squid would give you a good chance.
The rough ground to the right gives you a chance of some wrasse and pollack too.
The whole length of beach shelves very quickly into deep water, so it has the potential to throw up some strange fish at times (i.e. that sunfish from Rostoonstown!).
The main thing to remember is to only fish it at night. I'd suggest trying two rods, when at 50 yards with smaller baits, and one as far as you can cast with large baits. I hope to head down myself in early December to give it a shot.

carne pier would be a last alternative if the beaches at the coombe and further up are not fish able, dabs small whiting and school bass can be caught there, quite shallow so surf can help.the beaches at the coombe are showing fish at mom., codling to 3lb alot of coalies, still a few dogs about and the bass are on the drift but still a chance of a big one with a good chop on it.had some fine bass to 8lb further up at the white hole end in october, weather broke just at the wrong time. the only bait for bass is mackeral, out fishes all other baits on these beaches, proven time and time again. Most of the beaches will not be fishable for at least two days after a good blow due to weed and sw wind. the last turn off referred to is churchtown/cut of lake area, fished it on sunday with friends, one codling and a ray with plenty of coalies and dogs about, going that direction again tonight, ideal conditions, tide will be on the fall but wont matter that much as it often fishes better then, fingers crossed :D :?:

Carne pier would be poor maybe a few flounder. The pier in Kilmore is a far better option, plenty of quality coalies and some nice cod.
