Winter Cut off?

Ok, it's that time of the year again and just to complicate matters, i'm starting to get into this oul sea fishing lark. Judging by previous conversations with K2 and my sometimes numerous questions, there seems to be a couple of months the far side of christmas that the fish just seem to stop biting, would you agree with this? Or can you continue fishing with some success? Are there many shore fish that will still continue to happily take the bait? Is a change of tactics in order to target specific species?

Or should you just sit at home supping something warm? :D

some north and northeast coast marks will still throw up some small fish into march april time though numbers are thinner on the ground, its more a case of scaling down gear where possible. east strand in portrush threw up some good fishing into febuary last year with small coalies and whiting and some nice whiting and flounder putting in an appearance.
all over whiting tend to be one of your more prolific catches to keep you busy on the shore during winter.

february and march seem to be the slower times. things pick up again around the last 2 weeks in april weather depending. during february and march you are almost better off fishing less and getting you gear in order for the months ahead! if you pick your times and venues right you will still do alright during the slower months. as Phil said, scaling down your end gear will bring results with dabs, flounder and coalies, with plaice showing in march if conditions are right. however if you are willing to travel you can still get decent fish on different venues. april usually sees the first of the flounder and pollack around my way with may seeing things in full swing again for a lot of species. you will still catch codling during feb/march if you pick the venue right- usually a reaonable deep rock/ pier/ beach mark with a good tide rip nearby.
