Hi,
In the following months I'm planning some tope fishing from the wicklow beaches. Could anyone reccomend a rod which would be best suited to this task? Bait would most likely be mackerel flappers.
Thanks

If you are really serious in your pursuit good quality rods eg. Conoflex Nemesis, Conoflex Highlander, Conoflex Anubis come to mind first, have a read here:
http://conoflex.co.uk/rods_blanks/anubis.phpWee bit pricy to buy new but sometimes you might get lucky and find secondhand quality rods here in the for sale section or on the net.

budget would probably be max €200 quid. I was thinking along the lines of some of the greys rough ground rods?

I have a century compressor sports s which is an absolute powerhouse of a rod. I've tried for tope on it,to no avail

but I'm sure someone on here probably has given this rod a proper test. There were a couple of second hand ones up for sale recently in the for sale section so you might get lucky.

Any beach rod capable of casting 6oz is fine. (Graeame Keane landed a good tope on a Grauvell DH)
Casting is not an issue as 30 yards will suffice, but you need a rod that won't break casting a 4/5oz lead and mackeral flapper etc.
More important is your reel, that needs a smooth drag & your knots need to be solid!

There's a TT Sport for sale on the site close to your budget, that'd be more than adequate for shore Toping.

With your budget I would go for a second hand Conoflex Nemisis Slr plus if you can find one. I am sure that all the rods mentioned could do the job but if the sea had a plug in it the nemisis could pull it out

you wont get better advice here than baitdiggers, the man knows first hand about shore tope fishing, check out his blog:
http://baitdigger.wordpress.com/2012/06 ... y-plus-52/just spotted one available on fleabay uk but you have to be quick:

The rod was auctioned as part of a liquidation sale and it most certainly was a bargain when I posted the link a few hrs ago, 'you have to be quick' wasn't mentioned without reason

- but I'm convinced that you can agree with me that this price for a brand new top class Conoflex Nemesis Plus SLR would have been way better than shelling out next to 400yoyos for a similar article from another web shop? However, that's life man, you have to be in - alas in time, obviously - to win

as alby said most decent beach casters will handle a tope from the shore as long as it wont snap with a 5,6 ounce lead, i had my biggest one from shore on a tt sport was horrible very sore on the back after a bit, dont go mad getting anything like a tournament casting rod what ever ya do, maybe a ian golds extractor?

Thanks everyone. I will look into getting a second hand slr plus then. Are there any other rods from other manufacturers that are on par with the slr plus for this type of fishing?

ian golds extractor/international match/ conoflex oblivion/ as said before the tt sport, plenty of rods that will do it in fairness most beach casters will easily bring one in, if you can get a shakespeare contender very cheap and can easily cast the weight needed

The first good one I had tore the muscles in my good thigh as I was on crutches at the time. I then went on to letting them run when they wanted to but this year I have tried bullying them, stopping them and turning them only letting them take anything when the line was singing. Lost a couple but it is all a learning curve!
The extractor has a lot of fans, I have never tried one but it would be well able for the job.
There was a lad on last year, I think his user name was forrest? he was catching them on a carp rod.
The marks I fished were snaggy and fast moving so that had to be taken into account as well as the raw power of the fish. If you are lucky enough to get a good one you will never forget it and will be cursed to hunt them forever

you can try to phone the seller, he has a number at the end of the listing but I'm sure shipping cost are expensive.
