different types of leads

just a discussion point to see what different types of leads you all use and what you think of them for different kinds of fishing, i dont mean basics like grip or plain leads but different shapes etc ie ball , pear ,pyramid , star, watch etc etc and any 'strange' ones anyone has ever came across.

saw some funny ones on saturday. apparently the northern lads use em. they spin in the tide or on retrieve and are said to work well. they paint em orange too! couldn't manage to get my hands on any though??

forgot to say it might be worth havin a look at the leadds the carp lads use. they have some unique designs.

At the recent comp at Rossnowlagh some of the fellas were using pyramid and other odd shaped leads. I've never actually seen the moulds or the actual weights for sale - anybody know a source? Sometimes use the bullet leads with a swivel mounted within it when light line fishing close in for flatties.

Use barrel leads for fishing twisters or rubber eels for pollock, especially of the shore. Found that pollock when they are being fussy will ignore a leadhead mouted twister but take one behind a barrel lead.

Anyone seen a mould for the standard leads with the golf ball dimples - apparently the dimples add distance especially in windy conditions!

I would have thought that the pyramids would be easy to make in a sandbox?

NB: I know now to dampen the sand with a non-inflammable oil as opposed to water or other types of oil :shock: Washing up liquid works but it stinks like hell when it burns in contact with the molten lead.

Do these actually work? I remember reading about 'em a year or two ago.

I believe the theory is that they are supposed to have the same effect as the dimples on a glof ball. The reason dimples are on golf balls is to make them spin in flight with the results that much longer distances are achieveable.

However, how is this supposed to work with a lead when it's anchored to a trace?

I was under the impression that the dimples improved the air flow, hence reducing drag (nothing to do with spinning) around the lead, golf ball, whatever. That's why they are supposed to cast further.

i have a few of the flat ones like a gredit card with crips. Got of ebay. just type in weights.

Very good for rough ground as they act like lead lifts.

mb3, the leads you mention, are they square pyramid shape going down into a cone or what shape are they?
if you are lookin some of whatever they were let me know and ill try to get some down to u some way.
orange leads have their day sometimes on that beach for fish attraction but i find yellow always outfishes it if you want to use any attractors.

would be interested in getting my hands on some of those dimpled leads myself, i remember a few years back after alan price won the world champs with wales sea angler done an article on him and he used them extensively at the time, i have a feeling that the supplier/manufacturer is in wales as a more recent article was done on guys using them while targeting golden grey mullet on a welsh surf beach also.

i read in sea angler the dimples provide better grip in sand.( coulpe of months ago , they are fishing a storm beach in wales) nothing got to do with range etc.

I got some 4 and 5 oz versions of the pyramid leads in Viking Tackle in Bray within the last month. Ask for Gerry and he should be able to sort you out.

Reading the Total Sea Fishing this evening - there is an ad from Torbay Anlging offering pyramid moulds making 3-6oz.
