a tapered shockleader will give you a longer mono shock absorber and also you will have the knot well on the reel when your fish gets to the last wave giving you a better chance of landing it,if you do use one take off some of the thinner line and do your knot where it gets to about 25 lb breaking strain,if the leader is 16 to 60 lb a knot in 16 lb mono will snap at about 12lb pressure as the knot weekens the mono ,not ideal if you have a 30lb main line

oh yea check your knot by wrapping the braid around your shoe a few times and give a good tug on the mono ,in my experience one knot in every 5 or 6 will fail (down to human error)better to fail at home than with a decent fish on!
