ecoli! ?

Fri Aug 17, 2012 8:37 pm

anybody heard of the dangerously high levels of ecoli in the sea all along the east coast of cork to kinsale??
its 31 times higher than the safe level for bathers at the minute,so much so that every beach from youghal to kinsale is closed to swimmers until further notice...
sounds like a good thing for anglers, peace and quiet
but i cannot help but wonder would or could this effect catch rates and would it be safe to eat a fish caught in these waters till we get the go ahead? had it anything to do with the recent red tides?
and when we get the ''belt away lads'' will it actually be ok?
any marine biologist lads on here care to shed some light, please do because i know f*#k all on the subject... :|

Hmmm Ill have to keep an eye on this.I suppose catch and release and some extra hygiene should make it ok.

plenty of shite flowing in to clifden bay for years and a lot of lads eat ray wings from the bay and i never heard of anyone dieing from them,i am thinking that some of the fish you catch in ecoli water is in better shape then some of the fish they sell as fresh fish in the shops

As a Microbiologist I think I can answer a few of these questions.

This shouldn't cause any problem to the fish stocks, If anything more shite in the water will feed the smaller invertabrates which in turn will feed larger species and eventually the fish. You have to remember the sea is vast so things get well mixed. An increase in levels may look huge but the only real risk should be to swimmers who are drinking the water.

As far as eating fish from these waters, dont worry, once cooked E. coli will be killed off. If you're worried, freeze your fish before you cook it as E. coli is also very succeptable to freezing. I would steer clear of eating anything from these areas raw though.

I hope this helps!!
