Deep Pier Wrasse Method?

Was just wondering what the best method for Wrasse is from a very deep Pier?

What kind of depth are you talking about.

I’ve fished Culoo rock Valentia Island about 30-40’ of water and used a paternoster rig and size 4 Cox & Rawle Extra hook. The bottom there is a bit snagy so I use a paper clip to attach the lead.

In depths of 15-20’ I’d use a sliding float with about an 8’ drop.
A bit of gentle ground baiting never went astray

Three way swivel with the drop to your lead tied with lighter line, very short snood and size 1 to 4 hook depending on the pattern. No fuss rig and effective.

Not sure just how deep but it has been extended another 30ft and gives access to very deep and foul ground.

So, it would be very deep?

Not especially, most tides are in the 3-4 metre range, so added to the 3 metres there, you are talking 20-25 feet in old money at high water on a decent tide. I know the place well, it looks very wrassey but I've only taken small pollack and very small wrasse off the rocks to the west, and feck all from the pier.

During the summer the pier is usually full of mack bashers looking to dash you brains out with wildly flying leads any time from 3 hours before HW to an hour afterwards - to be avoided. The leads come with six hooks in close attendance... total madness.

My standard set up for rough ground wrasse fishing is a swivel, short length of line with a blood loop near the bottom to hold a 1/0 or 1 any brand of hook, and below a paperclip holding a lead. I always place the hook near the bottom as it tends to find the better stamp of fish, there can be lots of small ones skittering about above the big loners...

I like the paperclip idea! Does it save many rigs/catches if the weight gets snagged?
