Spinning reel problem.

I have a shimano exage 4000 for spinning. It's great..very smooth etc. Only thing is most of the time the bale arm doesn't flip over automatically on the retrieve. This isn't a problem when I'm using braid as I flip it myself anyhow but it'd be nice if it would do it when i'm spinning with mono. Is there a quick fix for this? I've tried oiling around the bail arm etc but that hasn't changed it. Not a big deal but if there's quick fix for it could someone let me know? Thanks lads

Loosen the screw that holds the bail arm in place. The bail arm may have taken a knock at some stage and could be out of shape

Is there tension on the bail arm when you flick it over by hand I had a similar problem and found out that the tension spring was broken just replaced the spring from a mates broken reel.... The spring is under the covers screwed down on my real..... Hope that helps

I'm not sure whether the spring could be gone. In fairness it flips over about half the time just not always. I'll see does it loosen up and if not replace the spring. Thanks for the replies

I had something similar on an exage 6000. If u open the bail arm casing where the tension spring is look at the bail spring guide which sits inside the spring. Not sure if same as the 4000 but mine was plastic and out of shape so I just ordered a new one from Shimano felindre. It was quite cheap. If the bail spring guide looks ok then just get a toothbrush and clean out the area inside of the bail arm casing as sand can easily get in there....then just a few drops of oil inside casing and u should be fine ...... Hope this helps

A word of warning on the bail spring guide...
Recently I had a problem with the bale arm on my old Shimano 4000GX. When taking it apart in the kitchen the outer bale spring guide launched itself, hit my chest and evaporated completely (well I can 't find it! Organised herself and my 21year old son and between us we dismantled the kitchen and couldn't find it!)
So a word of warning the bail spring is pretty powerful and the bale spring guide would win olympic gold at "hide and seek"!
Just on the off chance - would anybody have a "Part# RD4264 Bail Spring Guide (B)" for a Shimano 4000GX (possibly any 4000 one would fit!)?

Thats exactly the kind of thing I was expecting if I opened it up and started messing around! Cheers for the info lads. I noticed that it flips over easier if I don't turn the bail arm to far before casting (about 11 O Clock as Opposed to 12 if that makes sense. If it get's any worse I'll check the spring. True, casing should be removed slowly in a controlled environment! If u really wanna it fixed it has to be opened - it's just a question of whether u do it yourself or send it away and pay someone to do it!!! Trust me, reels are easily repaired yourself and once u try it u might even enjoy it while saving yourself some dough in the process......
