Multiplier with fixedspool rod

Hi all,

again a beginners question....

I'm shore fishing for a year now. I started out with a very basic fixed spool reel and rod. Now, a year later, the reel is at it's end and I'd like to try a multiplier. Can I use my 'old' rod (ABU Entiser), ringed for fixed spool, with a multiplier reel?

The short answer is yes...

The ringing on a rod set up for fixed spool is not ideal for a multiplier but it will work- but pay lots of attention to avoiding the dreaded birdsnests!

It does not work in reverse order, i.e. you can not use a rod ringed for a mulitplier with a fixed spool as the rings are too numerous and small to allow for effective casting since the line is coming off a large diameter spool and not moving almost directly upwards....

I switched to mulitpliers a few years back and would not go back to fixed spools now. Others here can doubtless add to this thread...

i know its advised not to use fixed spools on multiplier rods because of ring spacing and size etc, but i have seen it done many times by others and also done it myself, unless you are trying to blast your rig to the horizon it doesnt seem to make much difference.
and likewise i have used a multiplier on a fixed spool rod, the only problem a found was the lack of rings at the tip of the rod, allowing the line to touch the blank when retrieving etc.

tried the fixed spool again on the multiplier rod there on sunday. out chasin cod. had a fixed spool filled with braid for rough ground- i can't recommend it enough!! i didn't loose a rig(!), well just a lead or two. it's as if the braid bounces the end gear out of the rocks?? also pulling for a break is short and sweet, no more walking back up the cliff face to snap your line. i love it. casts well too. recommended for rough ground where you have a height advantage and a steep angle from rod tip to lead.


oh have used fixed spool on a multi rod before and cast rigs out easily over 100yards without any problem with the line/rings. some reckon a blank rung for a multiplier is better all round as it means the blank gets 'used' more when casting?

The stripper guide on most multiplier rods is about a size 25 or 30 and on a fixed spool rod sometimes bigger strippers are used 40 possibly 50 to cater for the way the line comes off the larger diameter spool.

But if on a multiplier rod the stripper guide is far enough away from the spool face it will not make that much difference. The big problem comes mostly from the number of guides on a fixed spool rod. use a multiplier and the line will possibly touch the blank nearer the softer tip section of the rod.

Rule of thumb is, rung for multiplier and can be used for fixed spool or rung for fixed spool, should only be used for fixed spool.

The newer Fuji low rider guides throw this rule out of the window though, they are costly but I am told they are very good. I think they cost about £80 for a set, (pounds not euros) they want to be good for that kinda money 8)
