Hi Lads,
Does any of you have good experiences with squid as bait? Especially in the East Cork Area. The same is for mussles.
Thanks,

Squid is excellent as bait (see pic attached - Bass taken on ledgered squid!), important that it is as fresh as possible though (turns a pale pinkish colour when too old).

i find squid makes a great bait for whiting. it's a nice tough bait, and you really get your moneys worth with a box of the stuff. just fishing strips presented on a two or three hook flapper should get plenty of whiting, and the bait is readily available over the winter when everything else is in short supply. never had much luck with the mussles though...

Very strong winds tonight in Waterford but it should quiet down tomorrow morning. I'll try mussels in the morning between Dunmore and Tramore, as I've heard fish feed nearer the coast after a storm, especially on mussels dislodged by the swell. Anybody tried that before, any advice? Thanks

used similar tactics up round here with some good results for coalies and flounder.

Often use squid as a “tipping bait” (in addition to a main bait or cocktail of bait (I use a small strip or triangle over the hook point..helps stop mackerel or lug slipping down and masking the hook point, takes the crabs a bit longer to get through before they can pull off the main bait and adds a tempting high vis (white) attractor too. Nice and tough and stays frozen for a while when your out if you keep it in the block and covered well …Never had any luck with mussels

One possibibility is to use a whole small squid as a "bag" to hold 2 or three mussels. Pass the whole hook into the body and then the point through the wall of the squid. Push some mussels into the squid and tie closed round the line or hook eye. Puncture the squid in a couple of places to let the mussel juice out.
