Shockleader with braid?

Thu Jul 12, 2012 2:55 pm

I'm using 40lb braid on my fixed spool reel for beach casting. I have some 40 lb mono and was wondering should I put it on as a shockleader and if so, what knot would be best? (I should say I don't plan on using weights over 4 oz..) Thanks

I would say yes, put a shock leader on too as there is little or no stretch in the braid to absorb any impact from both casting and striking at a bite. As far as knots go i would recommend a double grinner knot as this knot has served me well for joining braid and mono on my wrecking gear. There are a few other knots which can be used, check them out on you tube.

I would use the Albright Knot as it is a very strong know for attaching braid to mono and it is a very easy knot,
just google the Albright Knot or look for in on youtube!!!!

Good Luck

I have used braid with shock-leaders in the past and have had problems with the leader knot catching the stripper guide and causing crack offs. The thick springy leader line with a heavy knot and soft limp braid following through the rings causes this problem. My advice through experience is to use a tapered shock leader with a double albright knot.
Another way around it is to not use a leader and use a casting cannon:https://www.veals.co.uk/acatalog/breakaway-cannon-1140.html

Cheers, I should say there's no power casting involved. A simple overhead thump is all I ever do. I might just try the normal leader first and see how I get on.
