I bet you have never seen/heard of this!!..

I was out at the local pier on Sunday fishing for thornies(got two beauties) and while I was there, two other lads set up..we got to talking when an oul fella fishin with feathers off the corner of the pier shouted that he had something big...so away we went and peered over the edge of the pier to see what he was taking in...at first we saw his gear, which had snagged on some lost gear from the seabed...so we shouted to him that it was weed he had...then one of the lads shouted 'that weed has a tail coming out of it!!..'
So we got the whole rig and line on to pier only to discover a dogfish attached to the gear the oul fella had dragged up!!..the doggie must have been on it for a while as the hook had rusted in its mouth!!..it was then dehooked and was soon back full of life after it being very weak when it was taken out!!...
We were wondering what the odds where of that happening and was just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience!?..

Yeah, I was fishing the English Channel about 10 years ago, out of Dungeness I think it was. We were pirking for cod, and I got one that had someone's bar pirk stuck in it's nose. They must've broken the link when he lost the fish because there was no line tied to the pirk. Poor old fishie, it was really skinny when we were catching nice fat ones all day, and judging by it's length it should've gone 8 to 10 lbs normally.

Fishing a few years ago with my cousin, he got a cracking bite and hit into a fish which he lost when the line above the trace parted, next cast he began reelin in when he got hammered again, I climbed down the rocks to land the fish but when he retrieved the trace there was nothing there.

Then i saw caught around the grip on the lead was some line, I dragged it in and a lovely 4lb bass was flapping about!

i was fishing youghal last year and had a crack off and then about 2 hours after when reeling in i felt a bit of weight and pulled in the rig i had lost with a nice plump flounder just shy of 2 lb it was the biggest fish of the day

So what can u do if the weed is stronger than ur main line ?
Dont tell me none of ye never lost a trace and there might be a fish swimming around with your 5oz lead and rusty hook ... Well, thats questionable of course.
In Green Park Youghal, it was very comon this winter you heard 4-8 traces per night with baits were left in the sea.

Haha that was me. Fishing north wexford last year or the year before and pulled in a trace with a dead doggie on it. I think the trace actually belonged to a buddy who was fishing there the week before.

Fishing off barrys head last year and I met two young fellas fishing baited feathers.I saw them lose their gear and thought nothing of it.I came back down the next day and got stuck in their gear.When I managed to drag it in I thought it was full of weed but there was a seagull on the second hook covered in weed.He must of been able to get the bait at low tide and drowned when high tide came back in.Very sad.

I was fishing with a mate in Ogmore Deeps South Wales when he had a savage bite followed by a slackline, good fight all the way in with dogged weight. I landed the fish for him, it was a ten and a half pound small-eyed (painted) ray, he had snagged a broken trace though the swivel and the fish was on the trace. Strong fish and clean trace so it could have only happened that day or the day before. Fish was returned safely with no apparent ill effects.

So what can u do if the weed is stronger than ur main line ?

lost a good few traces in my time, course i have, but every time i loose one, especially a baited one, or even worse when im bringing a fish in and the line breaks , i always get that little sinking feeling of some poor fish with a trace hanging from it getting snagged-up. its inevitable that it happens quite a lot. the lucky ones are those that are re-caught and released soon after.
dont want to sound a killjoy ecowarrior.. as i keep fishing and hope for the best. the dead fish should feed the crabs at least anyway

I was fishing in Tralore beach in Donegal, and just wanted to rebait my hooks, but once I start reeling it was heavier than usual, than I noticed that another line is coming with my rig, I pulld it in and there was another rig and about 20cm flounder on it. Hook wasn't to deep so I releast a fish, but i was just thinking how that rig with another 5metres of main line could appear down on clean sandy bottom just around 40 yards away from a shore, well unless someone made a dodgy cast.

not sea angling but fishing related. Fishing a local rainbow trout place near me as a kid hooked a nice trout which was putting up a decent scrap, but the line went light and i though i lost the fish, pulled in more fly line for it to pull tight and fight started again, didnt last long before my fly broke the surface hook to hook on another dropper fly and a nice 2lb fish on the point fly. So not only did i get a nice over winter rainbow (baked in wine, nice) but two new flies, boy was i lucky that day

We had a tope that broke off one trace and a few mins later caught it again it had the first hookin its gob

It's more common than I thought then!!...it kind of shows the lesson of taking not leaving libe or rigs lying behind!..
