Where to go in Sligo? Rosses point?

Hi
Going for a trip to Sligo with family, would love to spin for some pollocks, but never been there before. From what I found seems like Rosses Point is a good place for hour or two - any tips for fishing there? Any safety issues?

Fished there today.
No luck
There were some other guys, one with a spinning rod, one or two withfeathers for mackerel. As far as I saw landed one mackerel?
Tried everything - berkley sandeels, spoons, done some lure magic and still not even a touch.
Then made some basic paternoster rig and casted it far to the currents with a mackerel strip on a hook (hoped for a dogifish, as my sons are dying to see "a shark"). After about 5 minutes got a take, fish took around metre of line, I set the hook - response was something I never encountered, even when fishing for huchen or catfich -the most powerful run I've ever had. Than, after 10 or 15 metres fish turned to "block of concrete" mode. Tried to move it with all the power of my rod, but... finally broke 20lb braid and it was all over. Then, noticed that I'm a bit stuck on one of the rocks, as the comming tide cut my way back, had to go to the water in normal clothes... really refreshing :D Got no idea what kind of fish was it, rather large I'd say.
Than, moved a bit further north, to fish a small penninsula that could be seen north from Rosses point. Found some very, very promissing place - a quite narrow bay with nice rocks and rock platforms on the right, or eastern shore. Fished ther for a while - at high tide, but again, to my disbelief, haven't seens even a small fish.
But, learned some stuff today - tide won't wait till I play the fish.
A very lovelly day, felt like Spain, not Ireland, glad to be out.

Hi

Sorry being a bit late with the advice but...

This time of year, try the western point (Rocks) on Streedagh Point north of Sligo. You can get wrasse and pollack and sea trout close in, with dogs rays and flats on the sand and reputedly tope in the big current on the end of the point. Not a spot for the faint hearted, fish it on an incoming tide around mid water up and dont be afraid to fish close into the shore. Fish it into the bay and not out into the Atlantic. All tactics work. Hope this helps... If you want flats, fish the far end (northern) with worms from the massive beds inside the dunes but be careful of the tides here as they sweep in and around incredibly quickly...

Another spot the the pollack hole on the top of Aughris head. Walk around the hill up above the pier until the path crumbles away... you cant miss it. Fishes well to lures near HW near dark - you can pick up cracking big pollack here, up to 8 lbs with 4 lbs more likely.

thanks a lot for the tips!
I'll be back there if time allows, maybe on a kayak next time?
Family loved Sligo and the beaches around, so it should be easy to trick them for a trip ;)

Any idea what sort of fish it might been?

Just want to ask - is there - Aughris - safe to go with a kayak? Any strong currents, bloodlusting sharks?
