new to beach fishing

hi im just looking for a few pointers which im sure have being done to death here
im new to shore/beach fishing tried it once a while back but the day was to rough almost got blown away just want to find out a few things
1.how far out should i cast
2.should i be standing in the shallow broken water or stay on dry sand
3.im not after any species in particular will baited feathers be good enough for a beginner
4.im only using a budget rod to get started so i think im a bit restricted to my casting lengths
5.is this the best place to find and hear of good local marks

Hows it going not much of an expert but you're best using two r three hook flapper traces with gripper weight that's what I use on the beaches and its grand make sure u have decent line with shock leader you're rod will be probably grand as for distance you're best off alternating between long distance and short distance I think and this a great site to find out there's plenty of people on here that will give you more and better advice than I will but hopefully this might help you a bit where are you from and I might or someone here will let you know some marks

hey eoin,casting differences is usually up to the caster,whereverfeels good to you to land your bait,casting closer to land/pier/rocks can bring in allsorts.they say the third shelf of waves is a good place to land your bait for flatties,some say the fifth,i like to land 1 behind the where the waves start and one bait between me and that breaking point,wellies or waders can add extra distance to your cast,but you can also cast from the dry sand...
definatley use a trace of some sort,everybody has their own preferance for each mark,i generally use a two hook or a three hook flapper on 1 rod and either a pulley or a long and low,with a 4 or 5 oz gripper weight,while a good friend of mine will use a dead weight and let his bait roll around in the tide,often bringing in large flatties...
where are you situated? there are great marks on all coasts around the country...

2.should i be standing in the shallow broken water or stay on dry sand = depends on the beach wading not recommended in rough weather
3.im not after any species in particular will baited feathers be good enough for a beginner = no buy a few rigs to start off with (size 2 hooks )
4.im only using a budget rod to get started so i think im a bit restricted to my casting lengths=practice a bit and you,ll improve
5.is this the best place to find and hear of good local marks:=no we all tell lies specialy me!

Thanks for all the help im in mayo near Castlebar so Newport and Westport direction would suit best I've tried silver strand once but high winds put paid to that effort I've also heard off the rocks near mulranny is good?

I was new to beach fishing myself last year.
I found that when fishing competitions and every fish counts, you dont have to cast out far at all and sometimes they are laying just in the surf, ok they may be small but if they are over the measure it is points!
also, the smaller the hook size the better cause you will also pick up most big fish on the small hooks. I found that adding lots of beeds, spoons etc. helps a lot, I got 16 Dog fish one night on Tullagh Beach in Donegal, I had a lot of coloured beeds on my traces, the guy beside me only caught 3 and he had no beeds on his and we were using the same bait.
I also butchered a few Yamashita traces for use on the beach which helped me.
