Prawns & Shrimp as bait?

Has anybody used these as bait?
I'd be interested to know how you fished them and for what species?

tried prawns one time had a tiny codling.

Prawns are particularly effective in the surf near rock pools for bass and flatfish. They have also been known to produce rays in certain areas - i fyou do a search on the bulletin board using the facility above (third option to the right of "album") you will find plenty of information on them...

BTW, I am not talking about the pink shop bought boiled rubbish!

I am talking about the real thing ('shrimps' as we always knew them) collected in nets from the rock pools, a drop net down the wall of a harbour, pier or rock mark, etc. The problem can often be in presentation - fire wire hooks and shirring elastics works for the flatties but you can not use them on bass and expect to keep the fish on...

used live prawn a few times. biggest problem was that the wrasse loce them and couldnt catch anything else. ment to b better for bass under a small float as it keeps them out of the wrasses grubby little paws

What about fishing them as in freshwater for salmon - shrimp pin through to stretch out the shrimp and treble hook halway down the body, fished under a float?

Used to fish a lot with prawns under a float in ardglass harbour. It was mackeral at bangor that worked but prawns always outfished mackeral in Ardglass. I guess its easy to suggest that the coalies were used to the odd one falling off the trawlers,but i was always suprised how the passing shoals of mackeral always were more partial to prawn rather than mackeral strip. Used to be great fishing.

use them 4 wrasse they are deadly its as if the wrasse knows how fast they can move so theres no finiky bites .hold your rod you will now what i mean

I've used the prawn pin and treble hook approach - you can definitely get away with casting them much further. I've used the same trick for sandeel and sprat, whitebait etc. The LSDs tend to bend the prawn pin every time though - taught me to keep my fingers away from their mouths!
