Need advise re fishing from boat this Sat.

Wed Mar 28, 2012 10:40 pm

Hi all, I have been offered the use of a small boat this Sat, a Yak with 9.9hp yamaha outboard. Looks like this:
http://www.fun-yak.co.uk/html/fun_yak__secu_12.html

I will be fishing off Dunlaoire harbour from about 1.30pm to 4.30pm.
Now the question, what bait / rigs should I pack? Is it too early to try jigging feathers or hokies
Should I just drop down a baited 3 hook flapper?
I normally fish from beaches or piers but also have a 5ft boat rod that ive never used.

This is the approx area I will have access to:

Any chance of advise of a good spot to drift over or anchor up at? I have a good mapping hand held gps so coordinates would be great :D .

Many thanks in advance

Oh I know that :D
its actually very stable, I have had it out quite a few times before but just bringing the kids for a spin not fishing.
As you can see from my approx map area i'm staying very much inshore.
Thanks.

The tide does rip the further you go out in that area, so pleas be careful.

On this fishing side I've not done too much over that side so maybe someone can help there. Clean ground should bring dogs and Dabs at the least. There might be a few pollock over the ruff stuff... Always worth a try with some small feathers.. You might snag an early season Mackerel, but if you use small hooks there is a chance of a Herring this time of year.

These Maps will give you an idea of the ground around

You should be ok with the weather at the minute but I'm sure you wont take any chances. :D
I would try a few drifts in Scotsman's bay down towards the forty foot over the rough ground, chance of small codling and pollock.
You can always anchor up if you come across anything of interest, just watch out for the pots in there they can sometimes have a good bit of loose rope around them.
Down through the sound towards Dalkey Island small flats and lots of pin whiting. Be careful of the tide runs around the islands they can be lethal at times.
Be prepared to lose tackle some of this ground is a tackle graveyard. :D

Best of luck and enjoy, stick up a report of your adventures. :D

Be very very wary of the merging currents around the south east of dalkey island. It is very dangerous and I wouldn't think of going near there.
The rest of it is grand (around the island). A drift down the "sound" between the island and mainland can be good fishing.

This is especially around colliemore harbour, I would avoid fishing off the bottom around there.

Well it didnt happen
Sat morning was too choppy in the area for this small boat, so I decided that my first fishing in this boat can wait.
sure enough it calmed down shortly after but I had already swapped rods and headed for sorrento point.

Lots of guys there with feathers catching nothing so I put a 2hf with rag on the bottom, fished from 1.30 till about 6pm but only tiddlers, 2x pin whiting, 1x baby Gurnard, 1x 5" codling, 1x 4" dab or flounder (I dont know, gotta look it up)

So not a blank and I enjoyed the day so a success I suppose.

Next good weekend I will get out in the Yak :D

Thanks for all the advise.
