Co. Down Whiting

I have never actually caught a whiting!! It must show that I am a warm weather angler. I was wondering if the southern beach at the tip of Killard point Co.Down would be a good place to break this duck. Many thanks to any one who can offer any help in this

Bangor bay always has loads of whiting all through the winter. The closer to Christmas you get the bigger the whiting get. They usually hang around until late February to early March. The two beaches below Killard Point are called Benberg Bay and Ballyhornan Bay. To be honest both are really hit and miss and require long casts to get near any fish. That can include flatties as well.

If I were you I'd head on down to Ardglass and fish off the southern point. That's the rocks that you have to walk through the golf course to get to. You'll be casting into fairly deep water, considering the coastline and it usually gives the best chance of whiting as well as codling. One tip I would pass on is to use fresh mussel as bait, shell it and whip it on with elastic. It's deadly! We learned that from a Bangor man who outfished 5 of us on his own using shelled mussel.

Fishing from the end of the Longhole at Bangor harbour can produce whiting into darkness and as long as you can get your bait out a bit the bottom is fairly clean.

Happy hunting!
