gloves for gathering bait in the cold......

Sat Dec 24, 2011 7:33 pm

Alrite Lads. Can anybody recommend/anybody wear gloves when digging rag??? I'm not asking for the reason of cleanliness but of keeping the hands warm.... I'm of the 6ft/13stone variety of human being (lanky/skinny according to my very best of friends), and my hands dont get heat at all this time of year. Neoprene gloves do the job when fishing, but Im lookin something for gathering bait(keeps the hands warm but u can still grab a worm).

Call me soft if ya want  , but I put nearly tore a knuckle off last night digging close to home and I didnt realise I'd hurt myself till I noticed the blood running down the steering wheel due to lack of feeling in my mitts. Any suggestions gratefully accepted.

i use those builders type gloves you get outta the pound shop. the ones that are made out of elasticated cotton and look like they have been dipped into a rubbery soloution. (not sure of the proper name for them). keep the paws dry and great for digging through the sharp shingle while hunting lug. :P

Fingerless neoprene gloves can be picked up dirt cheap these days and would be your best bet. Sometimes I use my weightlifting mitts from Tesco, not for the heat, but rather to avoid blistering when doing a lot of digging. They would keep your hands warm though and are only a few pounds.

i used to dig rag quite a bit and black marigolds [heavy duty] worked the best all the others were too heavy.kept on breaking rag

Cheers for the suggestions and the laughs. With regard to time of year for digging rag, I've been digging them all year, every year since I was 13 (25 yrs) in Belfast and Larne Loughs. They are still here in numbers every year. This case would also apply to the commercial diggers who supply shops up here as well shipping them to England all year. This might not be the case however in other parts of the country where the amount of ragworm/areas to dig it are not as plentiful :?:

Lug spawn in October as well. Rag take 1-3 years to reach sexual maturity and die after spawning. Lug may live for ten years
As has been said marriglods, Im not over fussy about the colour but if your hands are dry they wont feel the cold so much

lack of circulation in the extremities could be due to an underlying problem ie a heart condition / blocked arteries from smoking or a bad diet my advice would be to seek imediate medical advice while your their have your prostrate checked it only takes a minute and might save your life, it wont hurt(much  )as for gloves for gathering bait marigolds are good any glove that lets your hands get wet is gonna let them get cold too, maybe a light pair of cotton gloves inside the marigolds might help
