Monkstown cork fishing trip

I may be let out to fish again this weekend and was looking for advice on fishing monkstown. I understand big casts and slack water on neaps are best with pulleys. Never been there so any PMs are welcome.

I find monkstown fishes (or is easier) to fish on the 3.4 to 3.6 metre tides, I learnt my lesson trying to use 2 hook rigs and lost a load, stick to pennels loaded with fresh peeler works best. I also find 20lb + line a definate as I fished it one day on 15lb line and disaster struck.

Casting out around 150yds will get you into about 60 foot of water
The problems start on the way back in, you has a 60 foot high rock to reel the fish over.

The smaller ones (2-3 pounders) are fine just reel in a fast as you can and they will come up handy enough.

The bigger ones will keep their heads down the whole way in and the only time you will see them is when hit the wall below you.
Again reel as fast as you can with the odd bit of pumping to try and get its head up. If you do get snagged with a fish on try giving it a bit of slack and see will it swim out of it?

The cleanest part is down to the far right at the end of the foot path.
The direst part is the grassy patch

Been there today, sadly without any fishing gear, but happy to watch for a while. Nice cod to 3lb takenalong footpath with peeler catching by far the best, macky was crap and razor was OK but lots of bites compared to hook ups. Only there for about 20 mins so a very quick analysis.

dont get too bogged down on all the hype about heavy gear strong line and all that. two hook clipped 1/0s or slightly bigger if you fancy, a good 90 to 110 yard cast will put you well among the fish sometimes even closer. a rod on the stiffish side and a quick retrieve reel something like the 525 are a definite help. the main must have for monkstown is fresh peeler crab it is really the only bait worth considering.

Around 50 yards out from the wall is as deep as it gets it's really no deeper out 150 yards down there, as it's the main shipping channel to Cork the depth is maintained, it was dredged in parts only recently

You probably did quiet well with your lot today as the harbour is full of fresh with all the recent rain and it looks like they may have opened the dam in Inniscarra also, the water is like a pint of Beamish
