HI Estuary Lad

Where exactly is important!

If it is the rocky shore east of the village, you will pick up silver (freshwater) eels, flatfish (flounder) with whiting and codling possible (might be early for one or both in October) and the odd bass.

If it is the harbour area, fish into the shipping channel marked by the buoys, and keep an eye out for mullet. Flatties and whiting are the key.

For the bass, crab is the bait to use. The others can be taken on the usual suspects, with sandeel a good option alongside worms and small strips of mackerel. Very small. Most of the flatfish are quite small so I would advocate something like a size 2 or 4 hook - reckon this will also keep you in play with the whiting (if they are around) and eels. You might also find mullet there as the council have yet to clean up the sewage discharge in the area, although the works have been approved...

For competition purposes, given there is a spring tide around the 5th October, I reckon you will not have to cast that far. Are you fishing up or down, reckon HW is around 9 pm, so I presume it will be on the up?

Hope this helps...

Hi,
was down that way last week. According to the man in the shop in cheekpoint a bass was caught there last week. Didnt get details on bait. tides etc.
Didnt fish there ourselves. For bait we dug monster ragworm in the mud flats at the back of the pier in Passage East. We managed a small bass and a dab on these ragworm.

Good luck

crab or rag best but lug will also catch.use small enouf hooks ,flats and eels ,for the flats you wont have to cast that far.

I've fished a bit from the pier but never caught eels there, mostly flats. I use no1 or 1/0 hooks, anything smaller and I only catch baby flounders. Do you need to cast far out for eels, and is there a bait you can use that flats would leave alone? Thanks

Hi,

I fish there quiet alot during the Winter and the majority of catches seem to consist of both Flounder and Codling. By all accounts there seem to be a few Codling in the river at the moment which is a good sign. Crab and Mackeral are excellent for the Flounder at close range as the tide rises, and the better Codling are a bit further out to lug and squid.

there is always a rogue Bass or 2 taken during comps.

Standard 3 hook flappers and Clipped down Pennels should see you right!

Good Luck in the Comp!!

Estuary Lad,

I'll be in Waterford at the weekend and if the beaches are too rough to fish I'll be hitting Cheekpoint so I'll let you know Monday how it goes.

hey

The competition went okay.Thing that annoyed me was the size limit was put up to 250mm.found out the night before.

First few casts went out bout 60 yards, nothing on them. the third cast went 30 yards out with crab producing a 350mm flounder.i was lucky to get it in as it got caught in old line.i had to wade out and free it.next cast same distance got a flounder 280mm again caught in the same line but got through it.

things then quietened, put 3 baits 80 + yards out and gota double codling both over 200mm but under 250.ended up wit about 9 of them.Got good bites near the end gave it a min or two, then reeled in could feel it all the way until about 5 yards from the shore the weight went, sickened, would like to have seen what it was.

got 3rd .next qualifier is Inch (kerry one) on Nov 6th, then Cobh deepwater berth on nov 27th.

thanks for the help
