hello folks i am also fairly new to fishing and caught 2 small rocklings but they were much redder than the one pictured above and i thought they were five beard rocklings but now im not to sure

they were both around 8-9 inches long and much redder. they were caught on mackeral very close to dunseverick harbour. sorry no pics but would be nice if anyone could tell me what they were. ( i know its hard without pics ) its eyes seemed to be more to the top than the one pictured.

i really should bring a camera next time

Its to do with diet and time of year, but my 5 bearded rockiling (pulled in last week was the same colour as yours) also on the 5 breaded theres a notable (what looks like a gash) on the back of the head nothin to worry about as its part of the fish which i recently learnt from here. ;)
are ya enjoying sea fishin :D :D so many different types of fish out there!!

Yeah only fishing 3 months really do appreciate the help from everyone only thing is getting two ways of doing things like putting on bait I was a rag worm man and grand at it. But now I found out ya can't use rag in winter and have to use lug and mackerel which I have never caught a thing on so think I must be presenting wrong!

Just thread the lug on as you would rag and maybe tip it with a small (2cm) strip of mackeral. If using mackeral only, cut it into strips 5-6cm long and about 1cm wide and just 'stich' it onto the hook by passing the hook point through the skin several times. The belly strip seems to be the most effective and its tougher too so easier to get on the hook, especially if frozen a few times already! Use size 1 or 2 hooks and you should soon be scratching out a few fish. Good luck with it!
