Sea Angler- October Issue

Anyone know where the brilliant bass mark is that the lads are fishing in one of the articles. It says it is near near tramore strand. There is a few pictures of the place (high cliffs etc.) . I am from Waterford myself and I still cant make it out. Really want to fish this place so any help would really be appreciated.

yeah i saw that too.he didnt say at start,just said about 40 miles from rosslare,but then let slip,with beside tramore,is it saleens by any chance?im not really local myself,just tryn2 work along that coast line,saleens is near tramore isnt it?i really dont know,but wud like to find out!

Why not ring up SA and ask them? Or did they say in the article that they're keeping it a secret?

It could probably be a number of marks anywhere between Hook Head and the far side of tramore. But I think it looks alot like the waterford facing side of Hook Head (somewhere between Hook Head and Dollar bay) - hope that helps

Definately not saleens. Fish there myself quite a bit. Saw a 9 lb bass being pulled out of there the other day. I think bob might be spot on but might try and get some info off sea angler

I believe it's actually not west of the Hook at all, I have found myself a decent mark this year and i think it ties in well with the article.

I won't give exact details as to be honest.....no one has ever provided me with any details of marks when i looked for them so call me a moan but there are my reasons.

on the way to the Hook, turn off for Bannow, go right at the first T-jumction. ignore all turns to the left. Keep going till you come to the sea and anywhere along this bit of coastline is all i'll say but it'll point you in the direction of some Bass hopefully.

This area may or may not be the one featured, but get out there, enjoy your fishing and don't come back to me if you Blank!!!

Now can anyone tell me where i can find shore turbot?......

head west or north or north west for the turbot. Another month and the beaches in Mayo are full of small ones, with the possibility of a bigger one. Small strips of belly mackerel on a long flowing trace do the trick. I find that shingle or coarse sand is a good marker for them although palm size fish show up on all the beaches here.

BTW, you are definitely rigth about the bass around Dollar Bay and west of the Hook... better bass fishing lies east back towards Kilmore etc.

Word of advice dont believe everything you read. sea angler is a good mag but some reports i just dont find reliable.the same guy earlier on in the year gave a glowing report on waterford estuary and said thornies can be caught from the shore. never heard of any confirmed reports though.also if the fishing was that good 40 miles from rosslare how is it that they only had one bass for what was probably a week long trip.PS look at the B+B recommended is this his,Hmmlots of extra buisness in the off season.

there are some exceptional marks for bass (and general) fishing in the south eastern corner - one thing to note though, big bass seem to be in decline and far less frequent - if i net a 3/4 lb bass i consider it a very good fish. My point is that you now seem to have to hunt for bass (no area is consistant anymore) but in turn i suppose whats seldom is wonderfull. What pisses me off though is the dingy anglers in certain areas who troll for huge amounts of fish - it has to have an impact on the local bass population. One other thing - has anyone ever seen a balif enforce or inspect the catch limit?

DaveN - I happen to know exactly where the featured mark is, but don't bother getting preoccupied with finding it because it certainly IS NOT a brilliant bass mark. There is so much rubbish in Sea Angler purely (in my opinion) there to encourage you to buy more tackle, but theres great bass fishing to be had in many areas of Ireland BUT you need to keep the lid on where you find good fishing or you will lose it.
The internet is a great place for exchanging ideas but a very dangerous place for talking about specific marks.
In the perfect world you could trust everyone with info on how and where to catch bass but although Ireland is a lot more perfect than the UK, there are still people who can get online and WILL TAKE YOUR BASS, so please be careful with your postings eh.

In my opinion Henry Gilbys is a numpty whos just on the make. (Just my opinion) and I'm pretty sure all them doubles the guy claims to have caught wont be around for much longer if he continues "selling out" his marks to the yellow rag Mod Edit

Why dont you tell me where it is then rapala and i can find out for myself. Share the wealth

Daven, if Rapala tells you, he is then telling hundreds of people on this website (which in my opinion is a very good site) And then more Bass will be killed as most anglers kill their Bass (which in my opinion is a shame). A good Bass mark that is posted on a website doesn't stay a good Bass mark for long.

I have to agree with Bob, every time I crossed the Wexford bridge this year I witnessed on occasion 40 to 60 guys fishing on the bridge for bass im sure that some of the southern anglers have also seen this, so I stopped there one night and had a look these guys most of them kept every small undersize bass so I got drunk off and confronted them all I got for my efforts was a good bollicking, so I had to just had to walk away. I personally think that an extended ban should apply to nursury areas like this. By the way im not normally full of doom and gloom it just annoyes me when you make a substantial investment in fishing gear to see the sport abused by these eejets

I have had the same problem down there,copperhead! Was told just how uglier I could be! If that is possible ;)
One thing- I thought the local Gardai have (maybe had) their own sea angling club down there-maybe they would take some interest.

I live just up the road from Wexford and I've seen the small crowds (thats what they are) fishing for Bass off the bridge. I've been told that this is partly due to a local ethnic minority who then retail it though their restaurants. How true this is I don't know to be fair.

No wonder there are no Bass in Ferrycarrig any more - well not like 25 years ago :D It's like running the gauntlet for the fish!

These people on the bridge are fishing for Bass - that is their right. We might not like it, agree with it but at the end of the day it is a resource for all. Maybe things like this would make a license for Sea Angling a good idea?

However they are also subject to the same rules and regulations as we are and 41cm is 41cm.

JD's point about the Garda is correct, there is a Wexford Garda SAC however I'd rather they were off catching nasty villains. To be fair if the Garda SAC club did get stuck in on the bridge there are many in the community who would say that they were protecting their own interest so this has to come from a party with no personal interest.

So where are the bailiffs? Sat at home watching Henry Gilbey on TV? :D Probably not but where is the cohesive effort of all our civil custodians to stop what is clearly happening?

Final thought - What about a fishery protection vessel moored by the bridge? :D

If enough of you report this to the Fisheries board inspectors, they have to do something about it. Thats what they are there for, thats what they get paid for, thats what you pay them for.
If they don't act you need to take the matter further. They are YOUR bass, YOU need to do your bit to protect them. It only takes a minute to pick up the phone, or 5 minutes to write a letter. If you get no joy with the bailiffs, escalate your complaint one step higher up the ladder, until someone listens. Name names and hound people.
Strength in numbers is the key. If you are in a club, get everyone to work together.
If these people are taking more than 2 bass per day, or selling them they are breaking the law.
Remember these small bass are your fish and your fishing future you need to do all you can to protect them, otherwise your fishing in Ireland will end up as bad as ours in the UK.
