Beara Peninsula

Guys,

Heading down to Beara for our annual trip mid-end of October and woudl be grateful for update as to how its been fishing this year. Always done ok for Pollock down that way but really fancy targetting some of the more exotic species that may prevail .....Ling, cod, Triggers etc anyone any ideas?

I fished a mark last week on the N. side of the Beara, between Allihies and Eyeries, hoping for something similar. The mark was VERY deep and I had hopes of ling/codling. Sadly only dogs and huss obliged but I'm sure it's a mark with great potential ! I think it corresponds with mark number 15 or 16 on the Ring of Beara map. A decent cast puts you on clean ground. Also tried the float for pollock ( to 4 lbs) and close in on the bottom for wrasse with crab ( again to 4 lbs). In 15 mins had enough mack for bait and the BBQ.

Highlight was spotting an orca only a few hunded metres off-shore.

I apologise for diverting this thread, but, Pyreneenguy we are off to Portmagee in a couple of weeks for a family holiday and my boy is whale mad. Last year we saw minke whale off one of the rock marks on Dingle and he was so excited. To see an Orca would make his young life, never mind holiday, are they around much? Any info gratefully received.

Quite honestly, I don't know ! I was chatting to a local a little after seeing the orca and he told me at this time of the year , sightings are quite frequent. Perhaps asking one of the boat-men that take people out to the Skelligs would answer your question ? I would have loved to do the trip again ( as we couldn't land last time), but conditions were far too rough this time.

Pyreneenguy thanks for the swift response will follow your advice when we get over there, would rather spot from the shore to be honest given horrendous sea sickness (even flat calm!! ) but, if it makes the boy happy it will be worth doing.
