Neaps for Rays??

Mon Sep 05, 2011 9:16 pm

I want to head to Kerry to try and catch a few rays before things really cool down. The only week i can get off work is a the big spring at end of the month.

I believe neap tides to be best for ray fishing?? so would i be wasting my time fishing a big spring?

any opinions welcome.

The strength of tide and how it effects ray fishing is mark dependant . I'd never target a neap but would go for a moderate tide on some marks

only found the differance on the east coast because of the tidal run on a neap tide is much easier to hold bottom than on a spring tide it is very hard to get enough weight to stay on the bottom for them

Good to hear SPA still produced on a big tide. :D That would be the direction i was planning to head.

i think the fish would still be there in a big tide its just a case of the tow being to strong and weed maybe an issue.

I have occasionally heard people recommending low tide of big springs on beaches, especially shallow ones, for the chance to reach rays which would normally be out of range.

fished the shannon estuary earlier in the year high tide didnt throw up one single ray same mark bait everything on low water threw up about 18 ray to almost 10lbs between 3 of us (just as someone on here told us) saying that on high water in very rough seas on kilcoole beach mate of mine caught a lovely ray few months back( think that was just a fluke though sorry dave) local infomation is best way to go i think, lads here are usually very good for giving good info if u let them know where u heading.
