bass diet

fished a wexford mark over the wkend, had some nice fish, would usually return any bass caught but one at about 3-4lbs was very deeply hooked and had to be sent to his maker.
When i was gutting him at home i noticed his stomach was full of shrimp.
hve noticed the bass taken on bait has been fairly low this month maybe they hav turned to this food source.
any1 ever tried fishin with shrimp or would you hav to use a imiation lure.

Shrimp are lethal for bass ;) You've just stumbled onto a well kept secret... the reason they are in the diet are why they are abundant now... this time of year, shimp will outperform quite a lot of baits with bass ;)

So where do you get them and how do you present them..?

Probably sounds a bit mad but I presume the shrimp that I see when rock pooling with the little ones are the very same lads that can be used. If so happy days as I know where stacks are.........! :)

Probably need a baiting needle to mount them?

fish are opertunists and will take most food thats easy to get in their mouth  i,ve had cod full of small crab take lug or razor ,just because a fish is stuffed with one particular food source dosnt meen it wont take another ,however some baits will outfish others ie peeler for smoothy,s ,its all about trial and error i wouldnt go to any mark with only one bait confident that every fish for miles is looking for it on that particular night, also you will normally find the one you have the least of is the one pulling the fish  thanks to murphy and his little law  its always a good idea to bring a few lures aswell as bass can be so tuned into chasing sprat and eels that they would swim by almost any static bait without even sniffing at it

Ya you can net them with a shimp net on the beech or in the rock pools. needle sounds fine.

You can catch small prawns in the rock pools (which are lethal) with a kids fishing net
Just hook them through the last section of the tail

they are(or were) a well kept secret :D you really need the big ones to have any sucess & the best place to get them is inside in a small habour at low tide & a big shrimp net or a cockle as the fishermen call it & swoop in around the weed & or any cracks in the struture.
i find that if you coulor them by boiling water over them is the way to go & try to mount them in a few different ways until you find one that suits you
