Goleen - West Cork

Wed Aug 10, 2011 4:54 pm

I'm going down to goleen for a week and I was going to bring a few rods down and bring the young lad spinning for mackerel and pollack. At least, that'll be my excuse for getting out of the house. I've been recommended a few marks for pollack and macks. What I'd really like to catch is a gilt-head bream or triggerfish though. I've no idea if they're to be had round the mizen peninsula but if anyone has any tips on rigs/marks/tactics for them I'd be most grateful. I fully understand if you don't want to share marks but a general nudge in the right direction would be great.

Many Thanks,
Mick

p.s. I'll only have 10ft spinning rods so casting a big lead and bait out to the horizon isn't a goer.

p.p.s I hope this is the right forum

further to my last. i am arriving in ireland evening 21 Aug. Dont know whether this is the same time you are around., staying 16 days
Try Toor Pier for the spinning and mackerel.
Head for mizen head from Goleen, once you have passed barley and gone over the bridge (causeway) turn left (mizen Head)
you will turn away from the coast.
Look out for a signpost (Mizen Head) 50 yds before the signpost is a small turning on the right (low stone wall) one track road
grass in the middle (keep to the road) you come to a dead end (about 2 miles) park up (there is room to turn round).
follow the track to the steps down to the pier.
Room for about 3 anglers (not fenced) deep water. Beautiful spot for Pollack (some large) and mackerel, wrasse.
Best 2 hour before HT - 2 hrs after HT. Float fishing is also a goer here as the bottom is very/very rough.

NOT A MARK TO FISH IN ROUGH WATER, however, it is somewhat sheltered
