conger marks

Is their any good spots on the antrim coast other than glenarm and garrons point for good size conger, and what bait work for you .

Co. Antrim coast is coming down with Congers. Thing is, very few people fishing for them.

Roughly where are you coming from?

Am more familiar with conger marks from Carrick to Red Bay. But basically anywhere where there is reasonably deep, rough ground should hold them. I usually fish over low water after dark using a beachcaster and a Daiwa sl20/30 reel.

Rigs are simple running ledgers with size 6/0 to 8/0 hooks ( Recommend Cox & Rawle meat hooks ) with 100/150lb mono connected to a good quality swivel.

If the ground you are fishing is very rough, use a rotten bottom to your weight so you don't loose a fish if your weight snags.

Bait wise, Mackerel is hard to beat but make sure that your hook point is not masked.

If you let me know what section of the coast you intend to fish then I will try to point out a few more specific marks.

any spots in paticular you could recommend (looking a decent pollock spot as well)? i fish all up (and down) the coast from belfast. never caught one but i belive i lost one in strangford one night :( . this years target was a fish over 3lb lol with my current catches a conger is my only hope!!!

You should give Blackhead a try as it's reasonably close to you. Only bad thing about it is that it can be a bit of a walk. Aim for low water after dark, I find that calm nights are best. You will need a good quality reel loaded with at least 25lb line as it's very snaggy close in. Don't forget to use weak line to attach your weight but remember not to try power casting with this arrangement unless you use some sort of lead release.
