in this question i would say that first thing you will notice a few bangs on your rod tip and when conger gets his bait he just swims away and this is your time to strike
don't pull him to hard hold it for few moments and you will feel him start to move then you can start reel him in, couse if there is big fella in the end of your line he could just snap a line that what happened on last my session
about the tackle, well lads above had already mentioned several sorts, i'v used strong pier rod with strong surf reel filled with 30lb line, steel trace and single hook size depends on mark and aprox what size conger mostly residenting around, i know some marks where rearly bigger than 4lb eels are been cought and another mark you just can guess how big they are, so have several sizes rigs with ya then you can change them when you find out what is happening in your mark
