conger fishing

heading west and want to catch me first conger .what gear do i need i have beach casters and boat rods i can step up for conger just would really want to know about the business end

Depends on the mark... The boat rod should hold up on a Pier mark and a conger or tope trace should do... it also depends on what size you are targetting...

dont go over kill on it dude i got a spinning rod for 18 euro and i got an 11lb conger last week, rod was under savage pressure and my arm was dead by the time i got him up but twas savage fun as for the traces i just got a few in the tackle shop for a euro each

what strength line did you use on the spinning rod?

in this question i would say that first thing you will notice a few bangs on your rod tip and when conger gets his bait he just swims away and this is your time to strike
don't pull him to hard hold it for few moments and you will feel him start to move then you can start reel him in, couse if there is big fella in the end of your line he could just snap a line that what happened on last my session
about the tackle, well lads above had already mentioned several sorts, i'v used strong pier rod with strong surf reel filled with 30lb line, steel trace and single hook size depends on mark and aprox what size conger mostly residenting around, i know some marks where rearly bigger than 4lb eels are been cought and another mark you just can guess how big they are, so have several sizes rigs with ya then you can change them when you find out what is happening in your mark

just a word of warning man . if you are gonna use a fixed spool reel you'll have to watch it like a hawk. if a decent eel finds your bait he can quite easily be sitting on the bait mouthing it until he feels comfortable enough to move off with it. at the point he moves off he'll feel the hook bed in then really take off!! we've had some screaming runs on the shore fishing conger set up with eels taking 10 to 15 yards of line in a flash. so if your fishing a set up without the benefit of a bait runner or ratchet you can very easily be going home minus a rod, reel and tripod
i would hate to end up reading in a report from yourself that you ended up losing the lot due to not being fully informed before you set off man. we've sadly seen it happen in the past to another site member and almost fell foul ourselves due to me accidently not flicking the ratchet on a boat rod when i got the bait down and settled. instead of hearing the tell tale click, click, click of a run i heard the banging and scraping of my rod and reel being pulled across the rocks towards the sea . i just got one hand on the rod as it was going over the edge, so was pretty lucky. and the eel only ended up weighing 9lb. so they are powerfull enough even at that weight

thanks for that will be using a bait runner that can take a good hiding .have already had that happen to me pike fishing a few years back lots off laughs for everyone bar me still comes up when im out fishing .ah the one that got away!
