WEED WATCH - Waterford & Cork

Postby MAC » Wed Jul 13, 2011 1:54 pm

Let's try to help each other out with this one!

If you are fishing an area that is full of weed or clean please post here. We are not looking for the mark you are fishing, but if you wan't to include it, please feel free. A General area like North Wexford or East Cork will be perfect. I am hoping that these stickies will become and invaluable tool for guys going fishing. For the guys not luckly enough to live close to their favourite beach this could be priceless. It takes a lot of effort to get the tackle ready, Sort the bait and then the drive to your favoutire mark only to find it unfishable due to weed. You log onto SAI the next day and find out that an area 20 mins was fine. :( How many sessions have been ruined this way!

Let's try get some up to date info on these threads to help guys plan a trip.

Great idea. Weed was thick in the surf on ballybrannigan yesterday evening. Some surface weed in ballycroneen and alot washed up on the beach so i'd say it would be dodgy over high water.

Thanks OP for starting this, hopefully it proves to be very useful.

Myrtleville / Fennel's Bay were pretty clear last night apart from the odd tiny bit of green stuff.

Does anyone know what the weed is like around the Courtmacsherry estuary at the moment?

much of the weed in courtmac/timoleague and ring/clon estuaries will persist until late autumn/early winter... this has been the case for a few years now.much of the surrounding areas such as beaches and rock marks badly affected too.....dont hold your breath on fishing these areas soon.
I KNOW ITS ONLY ROCK AND ROLL BUT I LIKE IT

Fished a West Cork beach last night, weed was pretty clear. There was some weed at high tide for the 1st 20 odd metres, but as the tide dropped it cleared up. After today's change in weather it could be a different story tho...

Just returned from a two day session in Ring/Clon area. The Ring estruary is carpeted in weed and it makes bottom fishing very frustrating & nearly impossible. Spinning & flyfishing near the surface is ok but you have to time your casts to get away from the litterally tonnes of weed floating around this place.

Tried two East Cork beaches last night but had to give up after just 2 casts at both as floating weed was so bad and weighing down the line :(

Was down on Incheydonney last week and it was brutal, had to wade out through the weed sludge to get to clean water.
Also, around Ring and West of Ring (Simons cove and Sheeps cove out to Bird island) - lure fishing impossible with weed. Conditions aside were perfect but couldnt keep clean lure in the water.....
Does the weed problem ease later in August / Sept???

inchydoney is always bad in high summer, with all the weed being washed from the estuary behind, but those pic’s are showing it as a hopeless place to fish at present.
Species 2011: Bass (FINALLY), Mullet, Flounder, Mackeral, Pollock, Coal fish.
