Re-using rigs

Mon Jul 04, 2011 11:10 am

Just a quick question, does everyone wash their traces/rigs off after a days fishing? I know you should replace the hooks every time but sometimes a trace may only hit the water once or be in the box with a wet trace and the next time you open up ur rig box they have a little rust on them but there still sharp??

I give mine a spray with wd40 when I'm done, usually spray a bit inside the sleeves on my rig wallet too, keeps everything in good shape a little while longer.

I reuse my flattie rigs all the time. I might use the same rig 30 or 40 times without changing anything. Once the hooks are good quality they should be fine. Also if it's only smaller fish i'm after i don't think there's a need to change the snoods too often. If i find rust on hooks or any signs of damage to snoods i'll scrap the lot and re make the rigs from scratch. I use conger rigs over and over again as the snoods are so thick it would take an awful lot of damage to weaken them and the cox and rawl meat hooks i use are good quality and don't lose their point too easily. If i'm catching alot of dogfish i'll throw away the rigs fairly regular.

Wd40 being a heavier form of kerosene, kerosene being oil, mono being single strand nylon, nylon used in the making of oil tanks, can you see where I'm going with this.....

What does WD-40 contain?

While the ingredients in WD-40 are secret, we can tell you what WD-40 does NOT contain. WD-40 does not contain silicone, kerosene, water, wax, graphite, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), or any known cancer-causing agents.

It contains:

Aliphatic Petroleum Distillates 60-70%
Petroleum base Oil 15-25%
Carbon dioxide - 2-3%
Non-harzardous Ingredients <10%

Aliphatic Petroleum Distillates equals kerosene :P
