Portmagee and Irish laws on right of access

We are going on a family/fishing holiday to Portmage in October and have done lots of research on the internet, buying Kevin Brain's book, etc looking for info on marks and species. Any further help on fishing marks or areas to get bait would be gratefully received.

Last year on Dingle we found various coast paths that we could follow to take us to places like Dunquin, Beenbane and the Lighthouse at Dingle. I was hopeful that the Portmagee area would have the same thus allowing me access to my choice of rock mark, but, as yet have not been able to confirm that. Having looked on google earth I have found some very interesting places that I would like to explore, but appear to have to cross fields/property to get at them. From what I have read I believe I have to seek the land owners permission before crossing fields and ensuring I lock up and tidy up after ourselves, is this correct? Also if you can gain access to the foreshore can you just keep walking around to where you want to fish or would this be classed as private land?

Sorry for the questions, but, with taking the kids with me I am keen to ensure I do everything right.

There is a great shore mark in valentia called 'Caloo' rock great for mackerel,, the best bait by far to use around the local area(ragworm is good to,but not many places to dig!),, i was fishing caloo earlier today and filled the bait bucket with launce,, hopefully get a few huss/ray tonight off the marina in the harbour,, the lighthouse area, northern side of valentia hbr. are easy to get to with out annoying any farmers..

Just a quick one on Culoo. If you are unfamiliar of the mark( or even if you are familiar!!) it might be best to avoid. There have many many anglers drowned over the last 15 or so years from the mark. Dont mean to b a kill joy but better that u know

That is very true about the anglers being 'lost' from this mark.. altough not all were regular shore anglers, with no disrepect to the people lost from this mark.. they were just wacking out feathers to fill a bucket.. not taking into account tides,wind,swell.. it is a dangerous mark but as with all marks common sence should prevail. the pontoon in valentia harbour have alot of sandeel around and shrimp is plentyfull around the area great for flatties and wrasse from the rough areas..

Have to reiterate what liamdenn said, just so he doesn't appear to be a lone gunman. If it's windy, wet & slippy, large swell....Caloo can be extremely dangerous. There was a cable at the wall of the ledge to clip on to years ago, not sure if its still there.

Schulz, my thanks for reiterating the warning, I will treat the mark with the utmost respect as no fish is worth my life.

Does anyone have anymore info on the rights of access or coastal footpaths in the area that can be used to access rock marks. I am ordering the Discovery map 83 so am hopeful this will help, but, any other assistance would be gratefully received.
