Ive been making my rigs using 40lb shock leader.
Is this right or should i be using lighter line and just putting the shock on my reel.

you should always use the same breaking strain line for your rigs that you do yer shockleaders... i personall wouldnt go below 60lb...

just use the 10:1 rule with rig body's the same as you would for shock leader.
10lbs breaking strain for every 1oz weight in lead.

Match the rig body with shock leader but I would go lower for the snoods - 20 - 30lb

I use 50 to 60lb for the main body of my rigs and as a rule i don't go below 30lb for my snoods,

If you are casting any distance then your rig body should be the same breaking strain as your leader, BUT if you are fishing for flats and bass in the breakers and not casting hard 40lb and even lower is fine a 60lb trace body fishing 10 yards out is overkill IMO...................
