just wondering, what is d correct hook size to use for close enough rock.rough fishing?what hook seems best??i get confused, like small hook, all fish will take it,n prob, swallow it,n then its awkward to get hook out,so sumtimes they dont survive, where as a bigger hook, only bigger fish take,so which wud b good?fishin around rocks, for bass, wrasse, pollack, etc!thanx.a run down on d general hook sizes for species would be great!thanx.also i hav 40lb fishing line on my reel, well 38 (18kg)i think,is that 2 heavy for spinning,etc??9 ft rod.

Hello,

For a spinning rod that size I would be using something like 15lb line on my reel, this will greatly improve casting with lures etc. This is also suitable for float fishing etc. If you are goint to use the same rod and reel for bottom fishing over rough ground then it would be too light, if your reel came with a spare spool you could load it with heavier line. A note of caution would be that if you are using the heavier line and try to pull out of a snag, point the rod at the snag and pull or better still wrap your line around a piece of wood etc. This will take the strain off rod and reel. It is quite easy to break a rod while trying to pull out of a snag.

As far as hooks go, for most situations a kamasan B940 in size 1/0 is a good all round hook although for the likes of Bass you would probably need to go to a 3/0. The most important thing to remember is that it is best to match hook size to bait size, a 1/0 in a chunk of Mackerel is not going to be very effective and vise versa.

Hope this helps.

hooks

All hooks will catch rocks ........its murphys law or something ..so the decision depends on..

species
size
bait
how you intend to land your fish

wrasse etc try the old mustad viking or an ultra point .
and make sure they are sharper than einstein
and as for spinning with 38 lb line what are you trying to catch marlin? 12-15lb absolute tops ..
