Vintage rod restoration help

Wed Jun 08, 2011 3:55 pm

While doin some cleaning yesterday I found an old rod my Grandfather owned and gave to me as a kid. There's no brand name on it but I reckon it has to be at least 40-50 years old. The eyes are missing on the top part but the blanks and reel seet are good. Question is can anybody advise how I go about restoring this rod as I would like to use it. Its about 8-9 foot and quite stiff so would do for some heavier plugging. Is there any way of testing the casting weight? Any advice much appreciated folks.

Is it split cane or solid fibreglass.

If split cane and been stored for a while (which is highly probable) it might have a set in it.

If solid fibreglass then probably the best thing to do is visit a good tackle shop using the existing rings as a guide and purchase the
equivalent sizes (replace the old one's) so that it totally new ringed.
Put the reel on and work upwards in weight until the sense the most suitable for the rod

Having googled split cane rods I dont think its made from that but I could be wrong. Its quite possibly fiberglass. I dont actually have the original eyes so will be needing new ones rung. I could try it myself but I know ill make a hens gee of it. Ill take some pics when im home form work and post them.
