Hey Michael,
To start off the Shannon Estuary always fishes bad with a northerly, seems to put the fish off the feed (in my experience) best pick a day with a light southery or westerly.
I presume you fished tarbert pier which isn't one of the better venues especially in daylight. I don't know what rigs/hook sizes tactics you used but in general, a 2 hook clipped down rig with a size 1 aberdeen pattern loaded with macko/squid or sandeel works well. If you are after Ray try a 2/0 pulley pennel rig.
Do a search for "shannon Estuary" on this forum and you should get plenty of info. Best of luck with your next outing.
Joining a sea angling club is a great way to learn new tricks and meet other anglers that fish some of the marks local to you.

tarbert pier at night used to produce good size ray, bull huss, some large conger, and codling however that was 15 to 20 years ago, and in the last ten years results were poor the odd time we fished it. as i said night time was by far the best, on a rising tide and over high water, once the shannon starts running out again you can forget about it!!!
