one punt had 10 boxes of 1/2 lb/2lb schoolies last week in they big tides

want the names of the boats involved???
only way to stop/ reduce this would to have a local baillif/ (me?)
want to know about polloution????
there is also alot pf berried v.notched lobsters sold localy

That's a lot of in-depth info.

Question is, what can any individual with this sort of info do about it????

http://www.sea-angling-ireland.org/bull ... php?t=3148

Pick up the phone and make that call. Insist on finding out who you speak with. Follow up with a letter to them, cc it to their boss so they can see action is needed. Indeed, cc it to Pat the Cope.

Demand action. Demand it now. Get a few other fellow forum members local to the area involved. Show them some of the shennanigans and get them writing in too.

This topic could go into the Conservation Forum.

Good on ya for standing up and shouting out.

surely at least some of "guest's" report is a bit, well, odd? a by catch from one boat of 15 basking shark(so far south?) 3 turtles(!)but only 2 seals only 1 tope but 4 blues (i'm assuming too that they are netting close in) - sorry i'm not buying this!

Mon Aug 29, 2005 12:54 pm

Where are you based Raymondo? There are basking sharks off Dunmore East in the summer, can't see why they shouldn't have them as well around Dungarvan

Basking Sharks

Mon Aug 29, 2005 1:00 pm

There is a rock mark on the seaward side of Helvic head and many basking sharks have been seen from it over the years. Its becoming a notable whale watching spot, so I can vouch for the basking.

Mon Aug 29, 2005 8:14 pm

A mate of mine from Dungarvan fishes out of Helvic a lot and has seen Baskings, Leatherbacks and sunfish so I dont doubt what Arthur is saying

Tue Aug 30, 2005 3:46 pm

its the numbers! or more exactly the ratios, four times as many blues as tope/ more than seven times as many basking shark as seals/more turtles than seals etc etc. no one is suggesting that basking shark do not exist in the south east or even that they are especially rare down there but they are:-
(a)endangered and therefore i would suggest rare every where
(b) a planckton feeder more commonly found in colder waters so if one small boat catches 15 as a by catch in waters where they are not particularly common i think it is odd.
likewise if there are four blue shark to every tope in coastal waters i find this odd, tope are a coastal fish blues are a fish of open water salmon nets are coastal therefore why so many blues? as for leatherback turtles these are a seasonal visitor from the carribean for one boat to catch so many? the sun fish, seals etc i do not have a problem with believing. i just find the numbers very odd (surprized no tuna/amberjack - or perhaps these were spirited away due to their high commercial value!)

Tue Aug 30, 2005 3:49 pm

Its becoming a notable whale watching spot-drseafish
ok so why no whales caught?

gripping stuff

Tue Aug 30, 2005 6:54 pm

no wonder so many of the fisheries are fecked!! probably only the tip of the iceberg - would have to say species distributions are changing considerably as the species prey assemblages go haywire

That's a lot of in-depth info.

hmm it certainly is a lot of in depth info?
which begs the questions..............

how does he know all of this?
how long has he been watching these people?
how does he know that they know who the bailiffs are and when they are around?
how does he know that the fisheries patrol boat had been hiding under the cliffs?

i also know where they meet the guy who buys the fish late at night/early morn. how? and how exactly have you been watching watching them without being caught?

for someone who has this much info on something like this makes u wonder whether he knows someone from this illegal fishing gang or whether hes some kind of undercover reporter or something.something tells me somethings not right,he must have been watching these people for a long time,i dunno, maybe hes an innocent person standing up for the likes of us but like i say,too much info makes it suspicious.
id say, check all this out 1st,see who this arthur is,see if his story stands up,etc etc.

basking sharks common off helvic have cought up to 7 in 1 day east wind brings them in close
up to mid 80S several daneish fishing boats hunted B.S.s with harpoon mounted in bow would also buy them off d.netters in helvic
seals
very clever few get entangled seals raid nets every day many shot
blues
very common in summer have seen within 100 meters of coast
most get entangledtrying to pinch salmon from nets
netting
usualy within 1 mile of coast

to answer the above questions
contacts
eyesight
check me out?
check this out lot of bass will be netted on sandbar outside oyster beds in dungarvan bay over the next cupple of nights the nets will be put out about .5 hour before L.W. up to 5 20 ft. punts involved each with .5 or more of amile of netting.

but that still doesnt answer my questions?

how do u know all of this info?
who and where have u sourced all this info from?
who are your contacts?
how do u know whats being caught and when?
how do u know when the fisheries boat is out and where it hides?
how do u know when the bailiffs are out and who they are?
you say some guy walked down the pier (plain clothed im assuming),and u said he was an undercover bailiff, how do u know that? for all u know it might have been a member of the public walking down that pier.

u see the thing is,if he was an undercover bailiff and he had an ounce of suspicion of illegal salmon fishing he would have lifted the lot of them there and then and the police would have been involved, hes hardly gonna watch them for a few minutes knowing that they are going stall with their nets until hes gone.thats like saying a bailiff catches someone without a licence whos fishing a riverbank and he turns a blind eye,it aint gonna happen mate.
i get the feeling that either your an ex poacher turned informer,or you was part of the gang and theyve cut u out of the deal,or better still, you are part of that gang and your setting them up to get knicked.

either way, theres still of a lot of unanswered questions.
