Hi all, I'm new to this beachcasting stuff, (well I want to start) I have done a lot of coarse fishing and a fair bit off piers + harbour walls in the past.
I'm living in Knocklyon Dublin 16, and working near Monkstown on the coast between blackrock and Dun Laoghaire.
Next week I plan on ordering and collecting (if poss) a Ian Golds Extractor rod (Fixed Spool type) from Paul at East Coast.
QUESTIONS:
1. What f/s reel do you guys recommend as a good match for the rod. It will be used on marks mainly from Ballbriggan to Wicklow town? Value but quality wanted same as rod.
2. Where do you recommend buying said reel (preferably shop as opposed to online)?
3. What chance of catching fish when casting from the small beach between west pier D/L and Seapoint martello tower?
4. I have read about the Bass closed season, but even though my chances of catching one will be slim what happens if I do? I thought all Bass shore fishing was catch and release, or does the 2 per 24hr rule mean maximum of 2 table fish? All my fish will be catch and release as I just can't bring myself to eat the fish i catch (Mackeral, Sand eel kept for bait only).
I'm sure I will have loads more questions soon but enough for now,
Many thanks,
Pat.

If you do catch a bass during the closed season, it is best to release it as quick as possible, and preferably without lifting it out of the water, during the open season only 2 fish can be retained in any 24 hour period, however there is a size limit, below size must be released.

while you are with paul have a look at the ian golds fixed spool reels, have not seen them myself but heard they are a good bit of kit for reasonable money
you might be lucky enough to get a couple of flounders from here but it's not very productive.
