flounder rigs

hi, lads silly question what the most common size hooks for flounder benn fishing a beach that holds flounder and bass getting the odd couple olf bass no flounders yet im fishing 1 rod with 2 0 pennel rigs is it possible to hook flats on that size hook dont fancy 2 hook flappers as i use a lot of razor find the pennel better just in case of a bass hitting it any ideas combination of a pennel up high and a smaller hook and trace on the bottom?

I'd suggest using a 3 hook flapper with size 1 down to 4 hooks on one rod, then your pennel on another rod if your wanting to pick up flounder and specifically target bass aswell.

You will get the odd flounder on 2/0 hooks but not many.

I use size 6 hooks on a 3 hook flapper. The hooks i use a gamakatsu. Good sharp pattern and the shank is very short. This makes it a little harder to bait up with worm but you can turn the hook in the fishes mouth very easily so this helps when the fish are deep hooked as flatfish often are. I don't bother with bling or beads on the line. I have hooked plenty of flounder on pennel rigs ranging from size 2/0 up to 4/0. I think a pennel on one rod and flapper on another would be your best bet. If you put a small hook below the pennel in a rig, you'd be retrieving the rig more often to replace the small bait so your large bait, aimed at bass will spend less time in the water.

Size 6's are often required on the east coast to scratch out a few flatties, but I rarely drop down that small myself.

Bass can and will be taken on your "flattie" rig often ignoring the bigger bait, so it wont "excusively" be fishing for flatties on that rig anyway.

Regarding hooks, I tend to use an aberdeen pattern such as the kamasan as it allows worm baits to be presented on the hook well. But if just using mackerel strips then circle hooks are a great alternative and help with a better hookup in the mouth of the fish.
