whats the best way to use a float fishing from rocks. is it pointless using plain feathers on a float and how far down should you generally fish with a float in order to catch fish.

try tipping the feathers off with a small bit of mac; and put on a stop knot above your float so you can very the depth of the trace, try fishing it just above the kelp.

Here's an example of a float set up, you can use feathers if you like if going for mackeral or small pollack etc, but personally I prefer using rag or mac under the float..but thats what works for me in the area I fish...give them all a try and see what works where

This might seem a little amateurish but is it pointless float fishing unless you can get your bait just above the rocks / weed? If you're a good 10 feet or so above are you wasting your time?

Just keep adjusting your depth with the stop knot until you get bites, you want to be just over the kelp/weeds not in them or you will lose tackle, start high and adjust to lower and lower

also bear in mind if you are fishing a rock mark that has deep water right at your feet the fish can be at any depth up and down the rock wall. providing there is plenty of weed growing off the rocks for the fish to hide in you can still get fish just a couple of feet below the surface, although ill be honest these "surface" fish arent as common as fish caught a bit deeper, mostly only get them this high up on a calm day if the sandeels are in. but personally i have caught a 2lb pollock 6 inches from the surface.
trying to get it just over the weed is a good bet and best place to start but if the fish arent biting down there dont be afraid to try higher up the water column. the key is to keep varying your depth until you find the fish and vary it again if they stop biting.

i agree with yngkmd. i generally float off the rock face at the same depth if theres decent weed etc there using rag or mack for bait.
i landed a good near foot long coalie last summer on the surface whilst reeling in the float to check the bait!
