How do you catch big huss

I mainly fish the Shannon Estuary and was wondering if anyone has any advise on catching Big huss such as marks near to me, tactics or anything else you can think of. I've caught plenty of huss using pulleys and fish baits with a preference for squid with a run of tide but would like to score a big one.

Yes would agree with that fresh Makeral is the key, I have not caught one since we moved over here nearly 3 yrs ago but just to wet your appetite here is one I got over in Scotland - 23 1/2lber that was on baited feathers 1 mile out on a good tide.

I personally have caught a lot of good huss out of the Shannon, From the shore places such as Kilbaha, Kilrush, Cappagh, Glin, Foynes and Carriagaholt. However from the Boat our best results have been off Kilbaha by far, There is some serious rough ground about a mile and half off the beach and perpendicular to the pier. I have the co-ords some where. I got a specimen out of it last year 16.5lbs and plenty of fish over the 12lb Mark in one session. We have found that Huss love fleshy fresh mackerel, on Wishbone type traces!, We got 6 doubles last may from that spot using this tactic. We were using rectangular cubes of mackerel for our best results. See my personal gallery for a better idea of the size of fish in that area :shock:

Alot of my fishing consists of using frozen mackerel due to where I live which is probably why I'm seeing my best results for huss from squid. In fact I've alot of confidence in using refrozen mackerel for ray. I'll make more of an effort to spin for Gars from Glin from now on. On one of the Henry Gilbey programs he mentioned using rockling as bait for huss. Any interesting lesser alternatives for when I can't get my hands on fresh mackerel.

Donagh what your doing is fine the only thing is the big huss are rare lately as we usually caught a few in each competition with the club but in the last few years the big ones are not as common I remember having up to six big huss in one session in Glin.

Someone told me the larger huss in the estuary seem to move deeper into the estuary as in the shannon airport auginis kildysert areas.............

Must try that pier in kildysert again should be good soon.

Yeah I have caught a few big ones around Kildysert too, fishing off the Tugs, caught them on sandeel there though, have found the further up the estuary the more frozen baits tend to work!

Neilus we must definately try Kildysert this autumn after work. Robert thats interesting about frozen baits working further up the estuary. BTW The tug boats weren't there last year don't know if their back. In fairness to Glin I haven't been fishing there at night but it will be easier now the evenings are drawing in.
