Pier fishing on rough water

Hi,

Took a quick spin to ballycotton yesterday, but when I got there the water was fairly rough and waves coming in high enough. So didnt even bother taking the gear out of the car. Is there much point to fishing in these conditions ? (had one session in similar water last year without success). Would I be better off heading to the beaches in these conditions ?

hi syboit, ones things for sure, the rough water wont stop the fish from feeding! if anything, it could very well encourage them to feed. as roger says, some fish move right into the shore looking for any opportunities (e.g. smashed shellfish, injured fish, bait fish seeking shelter etc) any and all sorts of fish activity can be expected! then again..., there just might not be any fish in the area.. and nothing to catch!
so it doesnt matter where this is, this applies to all locations - pier, beach, rock-mark..
so it all comes down to just how windy/wet/rough/cold it is, and just how much you are prepared to give it a go. being safe is the main thing but there will also be issues with just how uncomfortable it may be to fish in bad weather and just how tricky it may be to detect bites, and so on.
so its down to you to decide.
its probably better to head to a sheltered location if possible if its too rough.
