Mon Mar 21, 2011 11:46 am

My little one seen some kids crab fishing at the weekend and is hooked on the idea of it now.

the kids were using sausage as bait and it seemed to be working great.

I know crabs will pretty much take anything but i just wondered if anyone had any tips.

best bait ect......

get him life bait catch net, put some bait left over, such as fish head or etc.
let him left the net an hour so, after hour make sure your camera ready because he will be sceraming for couple of crap and maybe couple of small fish too.
The net is 10 yoyos so best 10 you ever spend for him

Leave a little bit of meat on a chicken leg bone and tie it on to a hand line. Bait lasts all day, and it will catch crabs. :D

I find rashers the best. Used to use it to catch them as a kid. The rasher doesn't fall apart easily so if the crabs are barely hanging onto a small piece of rasher they will still be attached to the line. The baits will last a fair while too. It worked wonders for us anyway. I'd say the sausages might fall apart alot easier. Also if doing this off the side of a pier, while your there, we used to get tiny coarse hooks and tie them onto the end of hand line. If you can pick a few muscles, open them and theres a tiny tough tongue shaped piece inside the mussel, smaller that a pea. Pop that on the hook and you'll catch all sorts of small fish on them. Used to have great fun doing that too off the little jettys in kinsale in cork.

Ah crab fishing! spent my childhood catching them your best bet is to tie a load of smashed up limpets to fishing line leaving the shell on for weight and fish in either shallow rocky beaches or deep rockpools or use one big limpet with a small size 12 hook because very often big blennies, scorpion fish, rockling and wrasse will grab the limpet. thats what got me into fishing!

I always wrapped some ham around a rock then tied it on with some string, dangled it down the edge of the pier, always did the trick.

Cant beat the rhine of the rashers done it for years , now bring the little cousins , cahore pier, wex, at the bars , there called the crab bars. Then race them down the slipway, been a few bass caught there too by the kids , must be coming in to feed on the crabs.

Go to a local butchers and ask him for some bones, Brisket bones are lethal. Dont worry it'll be free cause its waste in the end of the day. The crabs will go mad for the excess meat nd fat left behind when filleting etc. Bones act as a good solid base when lifting. Used to fill tonnes of buckets. If only proper fishin was as easy!!

I used to spend a fair bit of time crab fishing ad a kid also, we used put all the crabs in a bucket and then have crab races after a while - a crab version of Cheltenham :)

Used to always get a free bag if scraps from the butcher then tie a piece to a length if string with an extra stone if needed for weight, this would inevitably come up 2 minutes later with a heap of crabs attached.

I have heard that chewing gum can also be used, but don't know why you would go to the bother when scraps are so effective.
